PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES FOR LOCAL ADULTS TO DEVELOP THE BASIC LITERACY SKILLS NECESSARY TO ATTAIN SELF-SUFFICIENCY AND FUNCTION SUCCESSFULLY IN THEIR COMMUNITY. INSTRUCTION IS PROVIDED BY VOLUNTEER TUTORS, STAFF-LED SMALL GROUPS, AND A COMPUTER LEARNING CENTER.

THE EAST TEXAS LITERACY COUNCIL HELPS ITS ADULT LEARNERS IMPROVE THEIR JOB SKILLS AND BASIC LIFE SKILLS WHILE ACQUIRING A LEVEL OF LITERACY THAT WILL ENABLE THEM TO GO ON TO MEET THEIR PERSONAL GOALS OR FURTHER THEIR EDUCATION. STUDENTS ARE SERVED BY MEETING ONE TO ONE WITH TRAINED VOLUNTEER TUTORS, WORKING IN A COMPUTER-ASSISTED LEARNING CENTER OR ATTENDING SMALL CLASSES. WE OFFER FAMILY LITERACY PROGRAMS, AN ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE PROGRAM AND A CUSTOMIZED WORKPLACE PROGRAM. DURING 2021, 403 STUDENTS WERE SERVED BY 9 TRAINED VOLUNTEER TUTORS.
