EDUCATION PROGRAM: THE EFFECTS OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC ON PUBLIC EDUCATION DURING THE 2020-2021 SCHOOL YEAR CONTINUED INTO THE 2021-2022 SCHOOL YEAR. ALTHOUGH MOST SCHOOLS RETURNED TO IN-PERSON LEARNING IN 2021, MOST EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES REMAINED RESTRICTED, ESPECIALLY AT HISD, THE SCHOOL DISTRICT FROM WHICH TXRX LABS DRAWS MOST OF ITS STUDENTS. DESPITE THIS CHALLENGE, TXRX LABS WAS ABLE TO STAY ACTIVE AND ENGAGED WITH LOCAL STUDENTS. THROUGH THE SPRING OF 2020, TXRX LABS CONTINUED TO HOST REMOTE WORKSHOPS OFFERED VIRTUALLY FOR HISD STUDENTS AND ON-SITE WORKSHOPS FOR NON-HISD STUDENTS ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN ON-SITE LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES. TXRX LABS GREW THE PARTNERSHIP WITH HARRIS COUNTY JUVENILE PROBATION (HCJPD), OFFERING ON-SITE TRAINING IN AUTOMOTIVE ELECTRONICS FOR HCJPD YOUTH ON PROBATION AND ABLE TO TRAVEL TO TXRX LABS. WE ALSO BEGAN TO OFFER TRAINING AT THE HCJPD YOUTH VILLAGE FACILITY IN A BREADTH OF SKILLS - CARPENTRY, CAD, 3D PRINTING, CNC LASER CUTTING, AND ELECTRONICS. THESE PROGRAMS HAVE LED TO A RENOVATION OF THE WORKSHOPS AT THE YOUTH VILLAGE, WITH TXRX LABS DESIGNING MINI-MAKERSPACES AT THIS YOUTH RESIDENTIAL FACILITY. ON OCTOBER 1, 2021, TXRX LABS HOSTED MANUFACTURING DAY HOUSTON FOR 300 YOUTH, 15 SCHOOLS, AND 8 DIFFERENT SCHOOL DISTRICTS. THIS EVENT ALLOWED TXRX LABS TO CONNECT TO SCHOOL DISTRICTS NORMALLY OUTSIDE OF OUR TARGET, GROWING OUR STUDENT RECRUITMENT NETWORK WHILE ALSO BUILDING CITY-WIDE INTEREST IN MANUFACTURING CAREERS. MANUFACTURING DAY HOUSTON INCLUDED KEYNOTE ADDRESSES FROM JIM "MATTRESS MACK" MCINGVALE, MICHAEL HOLTHOUSE, AND MIKE FEINBURG, A EMPLOYER-EDUCATOR JOB FAIR INCLUDING OVER 15 POST-SECONDARY SCHOOLS AND 30 LOCAL MANUFACTURERS, AND THREE HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES IN THE MANUFACTURING SECTOR FOR ALL 300 STUDENTS. THIS EVENT WILL ALLOW TXRX LABS TO EXPAND OUR REACH, GROW OUR SCHOOLS AND EMPLOYER NETWORKS, AND BRING ATTENTION TO THE HOUSTON MANUFACTURING ECOSYSTEM. FINALLY, IN NOVEMBER OF 2021, TXRX LABS ANNOUNCED OUR FORMAL PARTNERSHIP WITH THE CACTUS JACK FOUNDATION, CREATING THE CACT.US DESIGN CENTER, AND RUNNING OUR FIRST PRODUCT DESIGN CHALLENGE WITH LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. WORKFORCE PROGRAM: THE EFFECTS OF THE PANDEMIC ON THE LOCAL GULF COAST ECONOMY BEGAN TO SLOWLY SUBSIDE IN 2021. TXRX LABS CONTINUED TO RUN SPECIALIZED WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT TRAINING PROGRAMS FOR A MODIFIED ECONOMY THROUGH THE FIRST HALF OF 2021, FOCUSING ON QUALITY CONTROL FOR MEDICAL MANUFACTURING. BUT IN THE SECOND HALF OF 2021, THE OIL AND GAS ECONOMY BEGAN TO START RAMPING BACK UP, AND TXRX LABS BROUGHT BACK OUR MACHINIST TRAINING PROGRAM AS THE TRUE MACHINIST TRAINING PROGRAM. OUR MACHINISTS SPENT THE OFF-TIME DURING THE PANDEMIC RE-IMAGINING THE NEEDS OF THE MACHINIST TRADE IN THE NEW MODERN MANUFACTURING LANDSCAPE. TRUE MACHINIST BRINGS A FOCUS BACK TO THE TRADITIONAL CRAFT OF MANUAL MACHINING AS A FOUNDATION FOR MODERN AUTOMATION AND CNC MACHINING. IN ADDITION TO MANUAL MACHINING, ALL STUDENTS WILL LEARN QUALITY INSPECTION, SOLIDWORKS CAD DESIGN, MASTERCAM PROGRAMMING, MACHINE AND TOOL SET UP IN ADDITION TO THE ENTRY-LEVEL CNC MACHINE OPERATION SKILLS. CREATING "TRUE MACHINISTS" WITH A BROAD SKILL SET IS CRUCIAL AS A TALENTED GENERATION RETIRES FROM THE MACHINIST TRADE. TXRX LABS WILL TRAIN 25 TRUE MACHINISTS ANNUALLY. AS A RECRUITMENT TOOL FOR TRUE MACHINIST AND OTHER MANUFACTURING-TRADE TRAINING PROGRAMS, TXRX LABS DEVELOPED THE MODERN MACHINIST INTERNSHIP. THIS PROGRAM BEGINS WITH AN IMMERSIVE TWO-WEEK TRAINING PROGRAM THAT GIVES YOUTH AND ADULT COMMUNITY MEMBERS THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPLORE THEIR TALENT AND INTEREST IN EIGHT MANUFACTURING SKILL SETS: CAD, 3D PRINTING, METALWORKING, WELDING, MANUAL MILL, MANUAL LATHE, ELECTRONICS ASSEMBLY, AND CNC PLASMA/LASER CUTTING. FOLLOWING THE 2-WEEK EXPLORATORY TRAINING, STUDENTS IDENTIFY THEIR TALENT AND PASSIONS AND CAN APPLY FOR INTERNSHIPS WITH SMALL MANUFACTURERS SEEKING PARTICULAR SKILL SETS. FOR EXAMPLE, STUDENTS WITH A PASSION FOR ELECTRONIC ASSEMBLY CAN APPLY WITH INOBRANCH, AN ELECTRONIC CABLING COMPANY, HORIZON AEROMARINE, A CONTROL SYSTEMS MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OR SANAVA LLC, A ELECTRIC CAR CHARGING STATION MANUFACTURER AND INSTALLER. THE PROGRAM UTILIZED FEDERAL WIOA FUNDS TO SUBSIDIZE THE INTERN'S WAGES AND PROVIDE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR AN "EXTENDED INTERVIEW" IN THE INDUSTRY AND VALUABLE WORK-BASED LEARNING. TXRX LABS WILL TRAIN 300 STUDENTS ANNUALLY THROUGH THE MODERN MANUFACTURING INTERNSHIP. WE PLAN TO ADD FOUR ADDITIONAL ADVANCED TRAINING PROGRAMS IN 2022: SOLIDWORKS MECHANICAL DESIGN, ELECTRONICS SPECIALIST, METAL FABRICATION AND WELDING.
