Describe the Organization's Mission:
Part 3 - Line 1
PROTECT MIGRANT RIGHTS BY ENSURING JUSTICE ACROSS BORDERS.
Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
LEGAL ACTION - OUR LEGAL ACTION PROGRAM ENSURES THAT MIGRANTS' RIGHTS DO NOT STOP AT THE BORDER. WHEN MIGRANTS SUFFER LABOR EXPLOITATION OR CIVIL RIGHTS ABUSES IN THE U.S., THEIR U.S. LAWYERS MUST WORK ACROSS BORDERS TO SECURE KEY EVIDENCE IN THEIR CLIENTS' COUNTRIES OF ORIGIN, OR TO ENSURE THAT RETURNED MIGRANTS RECEIVE JUSTICE EVEN AFTER THEY'VE LEFT THE U.S. SIMILARLY, MIGRANTS WHO FLEE VIOLENCE AND PERSECUTION NEED LEGAL ASSISTANCE IN THE COUNTRIES THEY ESCAPED TO OBTAIN DOCUMENTS AND EVIDENCE FOR IMMIGRATION CASES. WITHOUT CROSS-BORDER LEGAL SUPPORT, THESE MIGRANTS ARE CUT OFF FROM THEIR RIGHTS.WE PROVIDE MIGRANTS WITH ACCESS TO JUSTICE ACROSS BORDERS THROUGH TWO PATHWAYS. FIRST, WE MATCH U.S. LAWYERS WITH MEMBERS OF OUR DEFENDER NETWORK TO PROVIDE CASE SUPPORT IN THEIR MIGRANT CLIENTS' COUNTRIES OF ORIGIN. SECOND, WE TRAIN U.S. LAWYERS TO TAKE ON AND SUCCEED AT THE CRUCIAL WORK OF REPRESENTING TRANSNATIONAL MIGRANTS.
DEFENDER NETWORK - JUSTICE IN MOTION SUPPORTS AND CHANNELS RESOURCES TO OUR NETWORK OF 45 HUMAN RIGHTS ORGANIZATIONS AND PRIVATE PRACTITIONERS ACROSS MEXICO, GUATEMALA, EL SALVADOR, HONDURAS, AND NICARAGUA. THROUGH TRAININGS AND CUSTOMIZED RESOURCES, WE BUILD THEIR CAPACITY TO CARRY OUT HUMAN RIGHTS WORK AND TO EDUCATE MIGRANTS IN THEIR COMMUNITIES, IN COLLABORATION WITH BROADER CROSS-BORDER INITIATIVES. DEFENDERS INCREASE THEIR KNOWLEDGE OF LABOR AND IMMIGRATION ISSUES ACROSS THE REGION, AS WELL AS THE LEGAL AND POLICY FRAMEWORKS SURROUNDING MIGRATION TO THE U.S. AND CANADA. BY BUILDING THE CAPACITY OF EXISTING HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDERS IN MEXICO AND CENTRAL AMERICA, JUSTICE IN MOTION SUPPORTS THE DEVELOPMENT OF A BROADER AND MORE SUSTAINABLE BODY OF ADVOCATES ACROSS THE REGION, HELPING MORE MIGRANTS LEARN ABOUT AND DEFEND THEIR RIGHTS FOR YEARS TO COME.
POLICY ADVOCACY - INFORMED BY OUR CROSS-BORDER LEGAL WORK, JUSTICE IN MOTION ADVANCES POLICY CHANGES TO PROTECT THE RIGHTS OF MIGRANTS IN THE U.S., MEXICO, AND CENTRAL AMERICA. UNSCRUPULOUS U.S. EMPLOYERS MANIPULATE A HUGE ARRAY OF TEMPORARY VISA CATEGORIES TO AVOID REGULATIONS AND OVERSIGHT AND EXPLOIT MIGRANT WORKERS. IN MEXICO AND CENTRAL AMERICA, FOREIGN LABOR RECRUITERS CHARGE MASSIVE ILLEGAL FEES TO WORKERS, OR TRICK THEM INTO FRONTING MONEY FOR JOBS THAT DON'T EXIST. MIGRANTS ARRIVE IN THE U.S. OR CANADA SADDLED WITH DEBT OR IN FEAR OF PUNITIVE CONTRACTS, MAKING THEM EVEN MORE VULNERABLE TO EXPLOITATION. JUSTICE IN MOTION WORKS WITH ALLIES TO (1) INCREASE TRANSPARENCY IN THE COMPLEX AND ABUSE-RIDDEN U.S. TEMPORARY WORKER VISA SYSTEM, AND (2) CURB FRAUD AND ABUSE IN THE FOREIGN VISA RECRUITMENT PROCESS IN MEXICO AND CENTRAL AMERICA.
