OREGON CAMPUS COMPACT PROVIDES CIVIC AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AS A CORE EDUCATIONAL APPROACH FOR STUDENT DEVELOPMENT AS CITIZENS, LEADERS, AND LIFELONG LEARNERS.

SUMMARY: CCOR WORKS TO ADVANCE RACIAL JUSTICE AND EDUCATIONAL EQUITY THROUGH LONG-TERM COLLABORATIONS WITH K-12 SCHOOLS, 2- AND 4- YEARS COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES, NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS, GOVERNMENT AGENCIES, AND GRASSROOTS INITIATIVES. OUR OFFICE WORKS CLOSELY WITH OUR COMMUNITIES OF INTEREST: THOSE MOST IMPACTED BY SYSTEMIC INEQUITIES, BLACK, INDIGENOUS, AND PEOPLE OF COLOR, LGBTQAI2++ PEOPLE, IMMIGRANTS, MIGRANTS, AND REFUGEES, PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES, AND LOW-INCOME PEOPLE, TO IDENTIFY BARRIERS TO EDUCATIONAL ACCESS AND WAYS TO ADDRESS THEM. LAST YEAR, OUR PROGRAMS SERVED AND ESTIMATED 130,000 STUDENTS, EDUCATORS, AND ADMINISTRATORS IN OREGON SCHOOLS. OUR MENTORING AND CAPACITY-BUILDING PROGRAMS SERVED OVER 6,000 STUDENTS WHO REPORTED INCREASED EDUCATIONAL ENGAGEMENT. ADDITIONALLY, OUR CAPACITY-BUILDING PROGRAMS RAISED OVER 6 MILLION DOLLARS IN CASH RESOURCES FOR COMMUNITIES IMPACTED BY COVID-19. OUR PROGRAMS COORDINATED FOOD PANTRIES WORKED TO BRIDGE THE DIGITAL DIVIDE, AND PROVIDED NON-ACADEMIC SUPPORT TO STUDENTS SUCH AS HOUSING, DISASTER AID (FOREST FIRES), AND HEALTH CARE. CAMPUS COMPACT OF OREGON ALSO DEVELOPED NEW PROGRAMMING AND PARTNERSHIPS TO PROVIDE EXPANDED PROGRAMMING TO OUR CAMPUS AND COMMUNITY PARTNERS. THE LAST TWO YEARS HAVE DEMANDED THAT OUR ORGANIZATION SHIFT ITS METHODS AND STRUCTURE TO ADAPT TO A WORLD PERMANENTLY ALTERED BY COVID-19. ADDITIONALLY, AS AN ORGANIZATION WITH AN EXPLICIT FOCUS ON RACIAL EQUITY AND EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY AND CIVIC ENGAGEMENT, WE HAVE BEEN COMPELLED TO WORK WITH OUR COMMUNITIES OF INTEREST MORE CLOSELY AND INTENTIONALLY. IN STRIVING TO EMBODY OUR RACIAL JUSTICE MISSION MORE INTENTIONALLY, OUR OFFICE HAS WORKED DILIGENTLY TO IMPROVE OUR OUTWARD-FACING PROGRAM OFFERINGS, EXPAND OUR TRAINING AND CONSULTING, AND DEEPEN COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS. CCOR HAS ALSO IMPLEMENTED NEW AND IMPROVED INTERNAL POLICIES AND PROCEDURES. ACCORDINGLY, CCOR'S ACCOMPLISHMENTS ARE LISTED BELOW: COALITION BUILDING AND CO-CURRICULAR PROGRAMMING: THE ORGANIZATION SUPPORTED NEW COALITION INITIATIVES. THE FIRST IS THE RACIAL JUSTICE CAMPUS COLLABORATIVE WHICH CONVENES TO SUPPORT PROGRAMMING THAT CENTERS ON THE VOICES AND WISDOM OF BIPOC COMMUNITIES IN OREGON. AS A RESULT OF THIS COLLABORATION, CAMPUS COMPACT OF OREGON HOSTED ITS THIRD ANNUAL BLACK LIBERATION IN HIGHER ED TEACH-IN EVENT, WHICH HAD ABOUT 300 PARTICIPANTS, ALL OF WHOM WERE STUDENTS, EDUCATORS, ADMINISTRATORS FROM K-12 SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES, AND UNIVERSITIES ACROSS THE COUNTRY. IN ADDITION, CAMPUSES PROVIDED 5,000 IN CONTRIBUTIONS TO SUPPORT THIS PROGRAMMING; THESE PAYMENTS ARRIVED AFTER THE YEAR'S CLOSE. PORTLAND UNITED AGAINST HATE (PUAH) AND CAMPUS COMPACT OF OREGON PARTNERSHIP: CAMPUS COMPACT JOINED PUAH'S EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP COMMITTEE IN 2021 AND BEGAN COORDINATING PUAH'S EDUCATION-FOCUSED COMMITTEE. OUR OFFICE HAS BUILT SUSTAINED COLLABORATIVE RELATIONSHIPS WITH THE EAST COUNTY RISING, PORTLAND BUREAU OF TRANSPORTATION, IMMIGRANT AND REFUGEE COMMUNITY ORGANIZATION, SOUTHEAST UPLIFT, APANO, PORTLAND STATE UNIVERSITY'S QUEER RESOURCE CENTER, AND THE COALITION FOR COMMUNITIES COLOR. OUR FIRST PROJECT, PLANNED FOR 2021 BUT WILL TAKE PLACE IN 2022, IS AN ANTI-HATE SUMMIT FOR STUDENTS AND STUDENT ADVOCATES AT K-12 SCHOOLS AND ON COLLEGE CAMPUSES WHERE STUDENTS HAVE WILDLY REPORTED HATE VIOLENCE (RACIALIZED AND IDENTITY-BASED BULLYING) IN THE PORTLAND METRO AREAS AND ACROSS THE STATE OF OREGON. WESTERN REGION CONTINUUMS OF SERVICE AND NATIONAL CAMPUS COMPACT: CCOR WORKS WITH THE BROADER CAMPUS COMPACT NATIONAL AND CAMPUS COMPACT WESTERN REGION NETWORKS TO PRODUCE CONFERENCES THAT ADDRESS CURRENT ISSUES IN EDUCATION. IN 2021 OUR OFFICE WORKED WITH PARTNERS IN OREGON, HAWAII, CALIFORNIA, WASHINGTON, AND MONTANA AND FOCUSED ON ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE THROUGH AN INDIGENOUS SOVEREIGNTY LENS. NEW MEMBER CAMPUSES: CAMPUS COMPACT HAS ADDED THE UNIVERSITY OF PORTLAND, PACIFIC UNIVERSITY, AND LEWIS AND CLARK UNIVERSITY TO ITS MEMBERSHIP ROSTER. BOARD OF DIRECTORS/LEADERSHIP: CAMPUS COMPACT'S BOARD OF DIRECTORS HAS GROWN AND IS MORE REFLECTIVE OF THE COMMUNITIES SERVED BY THE ORGANIZATION AND THE EXPERTISE NEEDED TO FULFILL THE ORGANIZATION'S MISSION. ADDITIONALLY, FROM AN OVERSIGHT STANDPOINT, OUR OFFICE HAS IMPLEMENTED NEW POLICIES AND PROCEDURES TO MITIGATE LIABILITY AND CREATE CLEAR LINES OF COMMUNICATION BETWEEN THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS, STAFF, AND THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR. LAST YEAR, CAMPUS COMPACT RECRUITED HANNAH CHERRY, DIRECTOR OF COMMUNITY-BASED LEARNING AT PORTLAND COMMUNITY COLLEGE, TSHOMB BROWN, FORMERLY THE DIRECTOR OF COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF PORTLAND, AND ASHLEY NEWSOM, FIRST TECH CREDIT UNION, TO SUPPORT FINANCIAL OVERSIGHT. JENNIE CHA, A LONG-SERVING BOARD MEMBER, IS NOW THE ORGANIZATION'S SECRETARY, AND ASHLEY NEWSOM IS SERVING AS THE TREASURER. ASHLEY IS THE FIRST REPRESENTATIVE OF A FINANCIAL INSTITUTION TO SERVE ON OUR BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND HAS ASSISTED IN RETOOLING THE TREASURE POSITION DESCRIPTION TO ENCOURAGE MORE FINANCIAL OVERSIGHT AND ACCOUNTABILITY. FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY: UNDER NEW LEADERSHIP, CAMPUS COMPACT OF OREGON HAS MAINTAINED A SAVINGS ACCOUNT WITH ROUGHLY 100,000 IN OPERATIONAL FUNDS, A FIRST FOR THE ORGANIZATION IN ITS TEN-YEAR HISTORY. AS A RESULT, THE ORGANIZATION ALWAYS HAS THE CASH TO COVER PROGRAM EXPENSES, IS PREPARED FOR AN UNFORESEEN FINANCIAL LOSS, AND CULTIVATES A CULTURE OF FINANCIAL STABILITY AND RESPONSIBLE SPENDING PRACTICES. IMPROVED SYSTEMS AND INTERNAL CONTROLS: CAMPUS COMPACT WORKED WITH AN INTERNAL EQUITY CONSULTANT TO REVIEW AND UPDATE THE ORGANIZATION'S POLICIES AND PROCEDURES AND HANDBOOK. AS A RESULT, CAMPUS COMPACT HAS REDUCED RISK AND CREATED A TANGIBLE FRAMEWORK FOR LEADERSHIP ACCOUNTABILITY AND A HEALTHY, PRODUCTIVE WORK ENVIRONMENT. AMERICORPS CONNECT2COMPLETE: CAMPUS COMPACT OF OREGON'S CONNECT2COMPLETE AMERICORPS PROGRAM SEEKS TO HELP PARTICIPATING CAMPUSES TACKLE CHRONIC ABSENTEEISM AND DEEPEN STUDENT ENGAGEMENT FOR CONTINUED SUCCESS. THE CONNECT2COMPLETE: EQUITABLE PATHWAYS PROGRAM AIMS TO DEVELOP PARTNERSHIPS WITH FORMAL EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS AND CULTURALLY SPECIFIC ORGANIZATIONS. C2C/EQUITABLE PATHWAYS MEMBERS WILL CREATE, IMPLEMENT AND EXPAND K12 ACADEMIC PROGRAMS THAT INCREASE ATTENDANCE AND STUDENT ENGAGEMENT THROUGH MENTORSHIP, FAMILY ENGAGEMENT, AND CRITICAL COMMUNITY-RESPONSIVE PEDAGOGY. IN 2021, 316 INDIVIDUALS WERE SERVED BY OUR MENTORING AND GUIDED PATHWAYS PROGRAMMING. OF THOSE, 232 COMPLETED 36 CREDIT HOURS IN THEIR FIRST YEAR OF COLLEGE. 176 STUDENTS SERVED BY OUR PROGRAMS COMPLETED A POST-SECONDARY DEGREE. FURTHERMORE, CONNECT2COMPLETE MEMBERS RECRUITED 75 VOLUNTEERS TO SERVE AS POST-SECONDARY MENTORS. AS A RESULT 12 ORGANIZATIONS IMPROVED THEIR PRACTICES AROUND RACIAL EQUITY AND EDUCATIONAL ACCESS. AMERICORPS VISTA AND SUMMER VISTA: THIS YEAR, CAMPUS COMPACT'S VISTA PROGRAM RAISED 6,249,921.00 IN CASH RESOURCES, 43,052.00 IN IN-KIND RESOURCES, AND FOR LOW-INCOME COMMUNITIES AND COMMUNITIES MOST IMPACTED BY COVID-19. VISTA MEMBERS RECRUITED 821 VOLUNTEERS WHO DID 2029 HOURS OF COMMUNITY SERVICE. SUMMER VISTA: THE SUMMER VISTA PROGRAM BEGAN IN THE SUMMER OF 2009 WHEN CAMPUS COMPACT AND ALL HANDS RAISED (THEN KNOWN AS THE PORTLAND SCHOOLS FOUNDATION) JOINED TOGETHER TO ADDRESS THE LOW HIGH SCHOOL COMPLETION RATE IN MULTNOMAH COUNTY, OREGON WHERE JUST 65% OF STUDENTS GRADUATE HIGH SCHOOL ON TIME. SUMMER VISTA PARTNERS WITH NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS THAT AIM TO SUPPORT YOUTH THROUGH THEIR SUMMER PROGRAMMING. DURING THE SUMMER OF 2020, SUMMER VISTA'S DIRECTLY RESPONDED TO COVID-19 AND THE MOST AFFECTED COMMUNITIES IN THE PORTLAND METRO AREA AND ALL OVER THE STATE OF OREGON. THIS YEAR'S PARTNERS INCLUDED THE ETHIOPIAN ERITREAN COMMUNITY RESOURCE CENTER, URBAN LEAGUE OF PORTLAND, AND WILD DIVERSITY. FULL-TIME VISTA: ESTABLISHED IN 2007 THROUGH A PARTNERSHIP WITH THE CORPORATION FOR NATIONAL AND COMMUNITY SERVICE, THE CAMPUS COMPACT OF OREGON AMERICORPS VISTA PROGRAM ENABLES COLLEGES, UNIVERSITIES, AND COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS TO DEVELOP EQUITABLE COMMUNITY-ENGAGED PROGRAMMING THAT INCREASES EDUCATIONAL ACCESS AND SUCCESS FOR STUDENTS FROM LOW-INCOME BACKGROUNDS AND COMMUNITIES OF COLOR. THROUGH A COLLABORATIVE, PROCESS- ORIENTED APPROACH GROUNDED ON A RACIAL DEVELOPING AN EQUITY LENS AND PUTTING IT INTO PRACTICE, VISTAS WITH CAMPUS COMPACT BUILD CAPACITY FOR COLLEGE CAMPUSES AND ORGANIZATIONS TO INCREASE ACCESS TO EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES TO ALLEVIATE POVERTY BASED ON COMMUNITY-IDENTIFIED ISSUE AREAS. FULL-TIME VISTA PROGRAM GOALS: "DEVELOP PROGRAMMING TO ADDRESS K-12 AND COLLEGE ACCESS AND SUCCESS FOR LOW-INCOME STUDENTS. "ENGAGE FIRST-GENERATION AND LOW-INCOME COLLEGE STUDENTS IN CRITICAL, POVERTY-REDUCING ACTIVITIES. "BUILD RELATIONSHIPS AND PARTNERSHIPS BETWEEN THEIR INSTITUTIONS AND THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITY.
