THE NATIONAL WORLD WAR II MUSEUM IS CHARGED WITH THE VITAL MISSION OF SHARING THE STORY OF THE AMERICAN EXPERIENCE IN THE WAR THAT CHANGED THE WORLD-WHY IT WAS FOUGHT, HOW IT WAS WON, AND WHAT IT MEANS TODAY-SO THAT ALL GENERATIONS WILL UNDERSTAND THE PRICE OF FREEDOM AND BE INSPIRED BY WHAT THEY LEARN. THROUGH EXHIBITS, MULTIMEDIA EXPERIENCES, AND THOUSANDS OF PERSONAL ACCOUNTS, THE MUSEUM TAKES VISITORS ON AN IMMERSIVE TOUR OF WORLD WAR II IN EVERY THEATER OF WAR.ORIGINALLY OPENED AS THE NATIONAL D-DAY MUSEUM ON JUNE 6, 2000 AND CONGRESSIONALLY- DESIGNATED AS AMERICA'S NATIONAL WWII MUSEUM IN 2004, TODAY THE NATIONAL WWII MUSEUM GOES FAR BEYOND THAT CRUCIAL LANDING ON JUNE 6, 1944, TO TELL THE COMPLETE STORY OF THE AMERICAN EXPERIENCE IN WORLD WAR II THROUGH IMMERSIVE EXHIBITS, (CONTINUED ON SCHEDULE O) STATE-OF-THE-ART MULTIMEDIA EXPERIENCES, FIRST-PERSON ORAL HISTORIES, 1940S-STYLE ENTERTAINMENT, A FULL SERVICE HOTEL AND CONFERENCE CENTER, AND ONSITE AND ONLINE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS FOR ALL AGES.OVER THE PAST 21 YEARS, THE INSTITUTION HAS WELCOMED OVER 8 MILLION VISITORS, INCLUDING APPROXIMATELY 975,000 STUDENTS AND TEACHERS, AND BECOME ONE OF AMERICA'S LEADING CULTURAL INSTITUTIONS. APPROXIMATELY 87 PERCENT OF THE MUSEUM'S VISITORS COME FROM OUT OF STATE, WITH ALMOST HALF CITING THE MUSEUM AS THEIR PRIMARY REASON FOR TRAVELING TO NEW ORLEANS. RANKED THE TOP ATTRACTION IN NEW ORLEANS, THE #3 MUSEUM IN THE US, AND #8 MUSEUM IN THE WORLD BY TRIP ADVISOR, THE MUSEUM IMMERSES VISITORS IN AMERICA'S WARTIME EXPERIENCE, PORTRAYING ALL MAJOR CAMPAIGNS OF THE WAR ON LAND, AT SEA, AND IN THE AIR AS WELL AS THE IMPORTANT CONTRIBUTIONS ON THE HOME FRONT.
