Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
THE RECYCLED MATERIALS ART COMPETITION: THE PAPERSEED FOUNDATION INVITED ALL MARIN COUNTY ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS TO PARTICIPATE IN AN ART CONTEST THAT CHALLENGED STUDENTS TO THINK CREATIVELY ABOUT THE ITEMS WE USE IN OUR DAILY LIVES. PARTICIPATING STUDENTS MADE ARTWORK OUT OF TIN CANS, PLASTIC BOTTLES, CARDBOARD, AND OTHER ITEMS THAT CAN AND SHOULD BE RECYCLED. BY CREATIVELY ENGAGING WITH THESE MATERIALS, THEY GAINED A GREATER UNDERSTANDING OF OUR WASTE HABITS AND ARE MORE AWARE OF THE IMPORTANCE OF RECYCLING. TEACHERS WERE ELIGIBLE TO WIN $500 MINI GRANTS FOR THEIR CLASSROOMS, WHICH WERE TO BE USED TO PURCHASE ART SUPPLIES. THIS WAS OUR PILOT YEAR, AND WE WERE PLEASED TO REACH A TOTAL OF 1,543 STUDENTS.
THE GLOBAL GIRLS EDUCATION INTERNSHIP: WE HAD A SMALL GROUP OF HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS MEET US IN OUR OFFICE FOR WEEKLY DISCUSSIONS AND FOCUS ON THE ISSUES THAT KEEP GIRLS OUT OF SCHOOL AROUND THE WORLD, PARTICULARLY IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES. PART OF THEIR WORK WAS TO DEVELOP PLANS TO SPREAD AWARENESS ABOUT THESE ISSUES, THUS CONTRIBUTING TO THE GLOBAL SHIFT TOWARD GETTING GIRLS INTO SCHOOL. WE DIRECTLY IMPACTED 3 TEENS IN MARIN COUNTY, BUT THE RIPPLE EFFECT OF THEIR WORK TOUCHED THEIR SCHOOL COMMUNITIES AND WILL CONTINUE TO IMPACT THE WORLD AS THEY GO OFF TO COLLEGE AND BECOME GLOBAL CITIZENS.
SANITARY PAD PROJECT: PAPERSEED ENGAGED OUR FOR-PROFIT BUSINESS PARTNERS IN A COOPERATIVE EFFORT TO GET TWO YEARS' WORTH OF SANITARY PADS DELIVERED TO OUR NGO PARTNERS IN KENYA. THIS PROJECT REQUIRED A GREAT DEAL OF STAFF TIME IN ORDER TO COORDINATE LOGISTICS BETWEEN OURSELVES AND THREE OTHER COMPANIES, AND THE PROJECT SERVES OVER 10,000 ADOLESCENT GIRLS ANNUALLY.
