FYO'S MISSION IS TO EDUCATE, INSPIRE AND BUILD THE SELF-ESTEEM OF MUSICALLY GIFTED AND AT-RISK STUDENTS TO BECOME PRODUCTIVE, CARING AND RESPONSIBLE ADULTS AND TO UPLIFT SOUTH FLORIDA'S DIVERSE COMMUNITY WITH QUALITY MUSIC PERFORMANCES. FYO IS THE "YOUTH ORCHESTRA IN RESIDENCE" AT NOVA SOUTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY AND THE ONLY SITE IN FLORIDA TO HOST ANNUAL LIVE AUDITIONS FOR THE TANGLEWOOD INSTITUTE. BOSTON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA. ORCHESTRAL PROGRAMMING PROVIDES 425 STUDENTS IN SEVEN ORCHESTRA DIVISIONS (PRINCIPAL ORCHESTRA, SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, REPERTORY STRINGS, CHAMBER STRINGS, SILVER STRINGS, ALPHA STRINGS, AND FLUTE CHOIR), BASED UPON THEIR LEVEL, WITH WEEKLY MUSIC INSTRUCTION IN A NURTURING ENVIRONMENT. IN ADDITION, SIX (6) CHAMBER ENSEMBLE GROUPS (AURORA STRINGS, TOP BRASS, IRIDIUM, UPBEAT PERCUSSION, STRINGS OF STEEL AND TROPICAL QUARTET) RECEIVE WEEKLY COACHING SESSIONS AND PREPARATION FOR OUTREACH PERFORMANCES. MUSIC MENTORING IS ALSO OFFERED WEEKLY TO ALL FYO MUSICIANS. IT COMPRISES A SERIES OF PRESENTATIONS, MASTER CLASSES, DEMONSTRATIONS, LECTURES AND INTERACTION WITH PROFESSIONAL MUSICIANS WHO ARE NOT FYO STAFF.
MUSIC STEPS (STUDENTS TRANSFORMED THROUGH EDUCATION AND PERFORMANCE SKILLS) PROVIDES 35 WEEKS OF FREE MUSIC LESSONS FOR MORE THAN 485 CHILDREN IN TITLE I SCHOOLS, SOCIAL SERVICE AGENCIES, AND COMMUNITY CENTERS WHO WOULD OTHERWISE NOT HAVE ACCESS TO ARTS EDUCATION. MUSIC STEPS HAS TWO COMPONENTS: PRE-SCHOOL EARLY CHILD DEVELOPMENT MUSIC CLASSES FOR CHILDREN ATTENDING PRE-SCHOOL PROGRAMS AGES BABIES - 4 AND INSTRUMENT INSTRUCTION, DURING AFTER SCHOOL HOURS, FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AGE CHILDREN IN GRADES 3, 4, AND 5 WHO ATTEND TITLE I SCHOOLS.
COMMUNITY PERFORMANCES AND OUTREACH - FYO ORCHESTRAS PERFORM EIGHT (8) MAIN STAGE CONCERTS AND ENSEMBLE GROUPS ENTERTAIN AT MORE THAN 40 COMMUNITY OUTREACH PERFORMANCES FOR NON-PROFIT, HEALTH, GOVERNMENT, SOCIAL SERVICE, SENIOR CENTERS AND FAITH-BASED ORGANIZATIONS IN BROWARD, MIAMI-DADE, AND PALM BEACH COUNTIES. MORE THAN 38,400 ATTENDEES OF ALL AGES, ECONOMIC STATUS, AND CULTURAL BACKGROUNDS ARE EXPOSED TO SYMPHONIC MUSIC CONCERTS.
