HABITAT FOR HUMANITY IS A CHRISTIAN NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION OF HANDS-ON PROFESSIONALS, VOLUNTEERS, AND FUTURE HOMEOWNERS WORKING TOGETHER TO RENOVATE OR BUILD SIMPLE, DECENT, AFFORDABLE HOUSING AND TO ULTIMATELY MAKE DECENT SHELTER A MATTER OF COMMUNITY CONSCIENCE AND ACTION.
Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
HABITAT WORKS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH FAMILIES IN NEED OF ADEQUATE SHELTER TO BUILD SIMPLE, DECENT HOMES. THE HOMES ARE THEN SOLD TO HABITAT'S PARTNER FAMILIES, AT NO PROFIT AND WITH NO INTEREST CHARGED. PARTNER FAMILIES INVEST HUNDREDS OF HOURS OF THEIR OWN LABOR INTO BUILDING THEIR HOMES AND THE HOMES OF OTHERS. THEIR MORTGAGE PAYMENTS GO INTO A REVOLVING "FUND FOR HUMANITY" THAT IS USED TO BUILD MORE HOMES. SINCE ITS INCEPTION, 165 FAMILIES AND 600 PEOPLE HAVE BEEN SHELTERED WITH THE CONTRIBUTION OF SPONSORS, VOLUNTEERS, AND THE SWEAT-EQUITY OF THE NEW HOMEOWNERS.
THE LAKELAND HABITAT FOR HUMANITY RESTORE IS A HOME IMPROVEMENT CENTER THAT SELLS QUALITY NEW AND RECYCLED ITEMS AT A FRACTION OF THE COMMON COST. OVER THE PAST THIRTEEN YEARS, THE RESTORE HAS RECYCLED THOUSANDS OF TONS OF MATERIAL, KEEPING IT OUT OF OUR LOCAL LANDFILLS AND RESTORE PROCEEDS GO BACK INTO BUILDING NEW HABITAT HOUSES.
