THE MUSEUM RE-OPENED WITH EXTENDED VIEWINGS OF THE RUDIN PRIZE FOR EMERGING PHOTOGRAPHERS AND ROBERT RAUSCHENBERG: FIVE DECADES FROM THE WHITNEY'S COLLECTION, A SUCCINCT SURVEY OF RARE AND CLASSIC WORKS BY THE CONTEMPORARY MASTER OF 20TH-CENTURY ART WHO LATER CALLED FLORIDA HOME. IN JANUARY 2021, THREE NEW SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS DEBUTED JUST AFTER THE NEW YEAR INCLUDING MARIA BERRIO: ESPERANDO MIENTRAS LA NOCHE FLORECE (WAITING FOR THE NIGHT TO BLOOM), JOSE ALVAREZ (D.O.P.A.): THE KROME DRAWINGS, AND ART FINDS A WAY. THE TWO SOLO EXHIBITIONS, MARIA BERRIO AND JOSE ALVAREZ (D.O.P.A.) OCCUPIED THE GALLERIES ON EITHER END OF THE SPECIAL EXHIBITION SUITE OF GALLERIES AND BOTH FEATURED ARTWORKS THAT SPOKE TO ISSUES OF IMMIGRATION BUT FROM VASTLY DIFFERENT APPROACHES. BERRIO'S LARGE-SCALE PAPER-COLLAGE COMPOSITIONS WERE THE FOCUS OF THE EIGHTH ITERATION OF THE RAW - RECOGNITION OF ART BY WOMEN - EXHIBITION SERIES AND COMPRISED A SELECTION OF THE ARTIST'S MATURE WORK FROM 2013 THROUGH THE PRESENT, PRODUCING NEW WORK SPECIFICALLY FOR THE NORTON EXHIBITION. THE KROME DRAWINGS BY JOSE ALVAREZ (D.O.P.A.) SHOWCASED A SUITE OF PORTRAITS THE ARTIST CREATED OF FELLOW DETAINEES AT THE KROME DETENTION CENTER IN MIAMI. THE INTRICATE INK AND PAPER DRAWINGS GAVE NAMES OF THE ANONYMOUS DETAINEES AND HONORED THEIR STORIES OF TRYING TO FIND FREEDOM IN AMERICA. THE AMERICAN EXPERIENCE WAS ALSO CENTRAL TO ART FINDS A WAY, THE PROJECT OCCUPYING THE CENTRAL SPECIAL EXHIBITION GALLERIES THAT EXAMINED IDEAS SURROUNDING RACIAL INJUSTICE AND THE GLOBAL PANDEMIC THROUGH CONTEMPORARY ART. AS THE YEAR PROGRESSED, THE SPECIAL EXHIBITION SPACES ON THE FIRST FLOOR WERE DEDICATED TO HIGHLIGHTING THE WORK OF WOMEN ARTISTS, LARGELY FROM THE MUSEUM'S OWN HOLDINGS IN FOR THE RECORD: CELEBRATING ART BY WOMEN. FEATURING NEARLY 50 OBJECTS, AND SPANNING MULTIPLE GENERATIONS OF ARTISTS, THE EXHIBITION WAS ORGANIZED TO HIGHLIGHT ARTISTS' DIVERSE PRACTICES WHILE OFFERING OPPORTUNITIES FOR VISITORS TO REFLECT ON GENDER-BASED INCLUSION, EXCLUSION, AND EQUITY IN THE ART WORLD AND BEYOND. OTHER EXHIBITIONS ON THE MUSEUM'S SECOND FLOOR INCLUDED CELEBRATING THE NORTON: EIGHTY YEARS WHICH FEATURED A SELECTION OF ACQUISITIONS AND ARCHIVAL MATERIALS THAT TOLD THE 80-YEAR HISTORY OF THE NORTON MUSEUM AND INCLUDED NEVER-BEFORE-SEEN DOCUMENTS, PHOTOGRAPHS, AND HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE COLLECTION. DYNAMIC, SQUALID, SPLENDID: THEMES OF THE CITY ALSO WAS ON VIEW AND DREW ENTIRELY FROM THE NORTON'S HOLDINGS OF PRINTS AND DRAWINGS, FOCUSING ON THE VARYING WAYS TO ILLUSTRATE URBAN LIFE. WITHIN THE PERMANENT COLLECTION GALLERIES, VARIOUS ROTATIONS AND SPECIAL INSTALLATIONS WERE ALSO ON VIEW THROUGH A VARIED ARRAY OF THEMATIC PROJECTS INCLUDING GEORGE COHEN: ARTIST OF THE CHICAGO AVANT-GARDE AND CHAIM GROSS: BODIES IN MOTION IN THE AMERICAN COLLECTION GALLERIES; DIVINE BEINGS AND KINGS OF BIRDS: CHINESE PAINTINGS EVOKING IMPERIAL COURT TRADITIONS IN THE CHINESE COLLECTION GALLERIES; WHERE? A BRIEF HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPH THROUGH LANDSCAPE AND WHEN? A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TIME AND PHOTOGRAPHY IN THE PHOTOGRAPHY COLLECTION GALLERY. EXHIBITIONS IN OTHER ROTATING SPACES INCLUDED THE COLLECTION OF ESTHER M. AND SUMNER L. FELDBERG AND WHAT'S NEW: RECENT ACQUISITIONS WHICH HIGHLIGHTED EXCITING NEW GIFTS OF ART AS WELL AS FRIDA AND ME, AN INTIMATE COLLECTION-BASED INSTALLATION OF ARTWORKS THAT ALIGNED THEMSELVES WITH THE LEGACY OF FRIDA KAHLO IN ANTICIPATION OF FRIDA KAHLO, DIEGO RIVERA AND MEXICAN MODERNISM FROM THE JACQUES AND NATASHA GELMAN COLLECTION WHICH WOULD LATER OPEN IN FY22. THIS FISCAL YEAR ALSO MARKED A CONTINUED DEDICATION TO PRESENTING BILINGUAL EXHIBITION AND COLLECTION DIDACTICS IN ENGLISH AND SPANISH - AN EFFORT THAT BEGAN IN FY20.ADDITIONAL EXHIBITION EFFORTS LED BY THE MUSEUM'S LEARNING AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT DEPARTMENT WERE INSTALLED IN THE CHRIS AND BERNARD MARDEN COMMUNITY GALLERY TO SHOWCASE THE TALENT OF LOCAL YOUTHS IN COLLAGE AND ASSEMBLAGE: EXPLORING THE CREATIVE PROCESS, WHICH FEATURED THE WORK OF 50 STUDENT ARTISTS FROM PALM BEACH COUNTY SCHOOLS, AS WELL AS MAGIC OF FLIGHT, THE ANNUAL AFTERSCHOOL ARTS OUTREACH EXHIBITION.
ACQUISITIONS AND CONSERVATIONTHE MUSEUM'S WORKS OF ART COMMITTEE APPROVED A TOTAL OF APPROXIMATELY 280 ACQUISITIONS THAT INCLUDE 155 PHOTOGRAPHIC WORKS, 100 WORKS ON PAPER, 16 PAINTINGS, 8 SCULPTURES, 1 VIDEO-BASED WORK, AND 1 PIECE OF CANTON PORCELAIN WARE. GIFTS AND PROMISED GIFTS FROM GENEROUS SUPPORTERS CONTINUED TO BRING EXCEPTIONAL ART INTO THE NORTON MUSEUM OF ART COLLECTION. THESE GIFTS COMPLEMENTED THE MUSEUM'S HOLDINGS, AND MANY MARKED THE FIRST REPRESENTATION OF AN ARTIST'S WORK IN THE MUSEUM'S HOLDINGS SUCH AS THOSE BY ARLENE SCHECHET, YUE MINJUIN, JOHANNA K. W. HAILMAN, HARTWELL YEARGANS, AND A MAJOR GIFT OF WORKS BY SAUL STEINBERG FROM THE ARTIST'S FOUNDATION THAT SPAN HIS CAREER. MAJOR PURCHASED ACQUISITIONS INCLUDE A WORK BY RAW ARTIST MARIA BERRIO AND THE SUITE OF PORTRAITS SHOWCASED IN JOSE ALVAREZ (D.O.P.A.): THE KROME DRAWINGS AS WELL AS A LARGE-SCALE PHOTOGRAPH BY YINKA SHONIBARE CBE. THE NORTON CONTINUES TO MONITOR OUR COLLECTION WITH EXAMINATIONS AND CONSERVATION TREATMENTS. ONLY MINOR TREATMENTS WERE NECESSARY THIS YEAR TO ONE PAINTING AND THREE WORKS ON PAPER IN THE AMERICAN COLLECTION. THE EXTERIOR SCULPTURES IN THE NORTON'S SCULPTURE GARDEN AS WELL AS TYPEWRITER ERASER, SCALE X BY CLAES OLDENBURG AND COOSJE VAN BRUGGEN AT THE MUSEUM'S WEST ENTRANCE AND HISTORIC PAUL MANSHIP SCULPTURES ON THE EAST FAADE OF THE 1941 BUILDING WERE CLEANED AS PART OF AN ANNUAL SCHEDULE FOR CLEANING AND WAXING. WE ARE ALSO REVIEWING THE CONDITION OF CHINESE BRONZE VESSELS FOR POSSIBLE TREATMENT AND UPDATING OF AIRTIGHT CASEWORK.
OTHER/EDUCATIONIN FY 21, THE MUSEUM REOPENED TO THE PUBLIC ON A LIMITED BASIS BEGINNING IN MID-NOVEMBER 2020. WHILE NO LIVE PROGRAMS WERE PERMITTED DUE TO THE ONGOING COVID PANDEMIC, VIRTUAL PROGRAMS WERE IN FULL SWING BY THIS DATE, SERVING ADULT, FAMILY, SCHOOL, AND COMMUNITY AUDIENCES. OVER THE COURSE OF FY21, THE MUSEUM'S EDUCATION DEPARTMENT OFFERED 30 VIRTUAL LECTURE PROGRAMS BY LEADING ARTISTS AND SCHOLARS IN THEIR RESPECTIVE FIELDS OF CHINESE, CONTEMPORARY, AMERICAN, EUROPEAN ART, AND PHOTOGRAPHY AND MANY MORE VIRTUAL GALLERY TALKS AND ONLINE CLASSES. SCHOOL PROGRAMS STAFF LED 103 VIRTUAL SCHOOL TOURS AND WITH THE ADDITION TO PALM BEACH COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT LIVESTREAMED CLASSES, SCHOOL PROGRAMS REACHED OVER 8,000 STUDENTS VIRTUALLY. AFTERSCHOOL ARTS OUTREACH PROGRAMS REACHED APPROXIMATELY 2000 STUDENTS VIRTUALLY AFTER VIRTUAL SESSIONS WERE "BROADCAST" TO ALL BOYS AND GIRLS CLUBS IN THE COUNTY. FAMILY FESTIVALS FOR HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH AND OUR 7TH ANNUAL CHINESE NEW YEAR CELEBRATION WERE HOSTED THROUGH AN ARRAY OF ONLINE PROGRAMS, AND ART AFTER DARK DID NOT SKIP A BEAT, HOSTING A LIVELY ARRAY OF NORTON FROM HOME PROGRAMS ON A WEEKLY BASIS THROUGHOUT THE FIRST YEAR OF THE PANDEMIC. WITH THE ARRIVAL OF OUR NEW DIRECTOR AND CEO, GHISLAIN D'HUMIERES, WE BEGAN PLANNING OUTDOOR PROGRAMS IN THE MUSEUM'S GARDENS FOR THE SUMMER MONTHS, FROM MEMORIAL DAY THROUGH LABOR DAY. A NEW ARRAY OF PROGRAMS INCLUDED OUTDOOR CONCERTS AND FILMS, FAMILY FESTIVALS IN JUNE AND JULY AND SCULPTURE GARDEN TOURS LED BY MUSEUM DOCENTS. BIKE AND WALKING TOURS OF THE MUSEUM'S AREA DREW AN ENTHUSIASTIC RESPONSE AND A NEW PLATFORM FOR INTERACTION WITH THE COMMUNITY. YOGA CLASSES, AND ART WORKSHOPS LED BY ARTISTS FROM THE NEARBY ARMORY ART CENTER ALSO ALLOWED THE MUSEUM TO NURTURE NEW PARTNERSHIPS WITH BUSINESSES AND COMMUNITY NON-PROFITS. ULTIMATELY, OVER 3,000 COMMUNITY MEMBERS PARTICIPATED IN THE SUMMER INITIATIVE.THE EFFORT REALLY KICKED OFF ON SATURDAY, JUNE 19, WHEN THE JUNETEENTH: FAMILY FESTIVAL WELCOMED 467 GUESTS IN FOUR HOURS. THIS FESTIVAL WAS PART OF CELEBRATING BLACK FLORIDA, A LIVE AND VIRTUAL SERIES DEVELOPED WITH LOCAL STAKEHOLDERS REPRESENTING THE COMMUNITY. THEIR INVOLVEMENT RESULTED IN PARTNERSHIPS WITH LOCAL ARTISTS, SCHOLARS, ORGANIZATIONS SUCH AS THE LITERACY COALITION, AND OVER A DOZEN MUSICIANS AND PERFORMERS. PRESS COVERAGE INCLUDED BLACK ART IN AMERICA, PALM BEACH ILLUSTRATED, SUN-SENTINEL, AND THE PALM BEACH POST. IN JULY ATTENDANCE GREW EVEN FURTHER, AS THE GAMES AROUND THE WORLD FAMILY DAY DREW 651 PARTICIPANTS. THE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT WORKS CLOSELY WITH COMMUNITY PARTNERS FOR PROGRAMS, INCLUDING THE PALM BEACH COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT, PALM BEACH COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY, THE ARMORY ARTS CENTER, LITERACY COALITION OF PALM BEACH COUNTY, OM YOGA AND WELLNESS STUDIOS, UPCYCLE, RICK GONZALEZ OF REG ARCHITECTS, ROHI'S READERY, PALM BEACH CHESS, AS WELL AS ARTISTS AND PERFORMERS ERIKA SQUIER, THE CIEL EXPERIENCE, LIBRA SENE, I-95 BAND AND MANY MORE.IN ANTICIPATION OF THE MUSEUM'S MEXICAN MODERNISM EXHIBITION SCHEDULED TO OPEN IN THE FALL OF 2021, THE NORTON MUSEUM ALSO LAUNCHED A MEXICAN MODERNISM COMMUNITY COMMITTEE WHICH MET ON JUNE 23 AND JULY 30 TO PLAN MARKETING AND PROGRAM EFFORTS FOR THE UPCOMING EXHIBITION OF THE GELMAN COLLECTION. THE GROUP INCLUDED BUSINESS, MEDIA, AND OTHER COMMUNITY LEADERS. ULTIMATELY, OVER 30 UNIQUE PROGRAMS AND COMMUNITY COLLABORATIONS TOOK PLACE IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE EXHIBITION; HUNDREDS OF HOURS OF TOURS AND VISITOR GUIDING WERE LOGGED BY MUSEUM DOCENTS AND BI-LINGUAL MEMBERS OF THE MUSEUM'S NEW GUA PROGRAM, FEATURING HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS FROM JOHN I.
