TO IMPROVE PUBLIC EDUCATION FOR ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED CHILDREN IN PALM BEACH AND MARTIN COUNTIES BY DEVELOPING, TESTING, AND IMPLEMENTING NEW STRATEGIES FOR LEARNING IN CLASSROOMS, SCHOOLS AND NEIGHBORHOODS AND TO SUPPORT EDUCATIONAL ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS UNAVAILABLE AS PART OF THR REGULAR CURRICULUM.

PREVENTING THE SUMMER READING SLIDE - TWENTY-THREE (23) HIGH-POVERTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS RECEIVED GRANTS OF UP TO $10,000 TO ASSIST IN ADDRESSING THE SUMMER READING SLIDE BY PROVIDING ACCESS TO PRINT RICH ENVIRONMENTS. THE INTENT IS TO PROVIDE CHILDREN WITH UP TO TEN, SELF-SELECTED "JUST RIGHT" BOOKS TO READ OVER THE SUMMER. THE GOAL IS TO HELP CHILDREN MAINTAIN THEIR INDIVIDUAL READING LEVELS. A FLORIDA ATLANTIC UNIVERSITY EVALUATION OF SUMMER SLIDE GRANTEES REPORTS THAT A MAJORITY OF THE STUDENTS WHO HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO SELECT UP TO TEN HIGH-INTEREST, "JUST RIGHT" BOOKS TO READ OVER THE SUMMER EITHER INCREASED OR DID NOT CHANGE THEIR INDEPENTENT READING SCORE UPON RETURNING TO SCHOOL AFTER SUMMER BREAK.
