EMERGING INFECTIONS PROGRAM-INFECTIOUS DISEASES CONTINUE TO CAUSE SIGNIFICANT MORBIDITY AND MORTALITY IN THE UNITED STATES. THE GOAL OF THIS PROGRAM IS TO CONTINUE THE POPULATION-BASED ACTIVE SURVEILLANCE SYSTEM OF THE ATLANTA METROPOLITAN STATISTICAL AREA THAT WILL DETECT AND RESPOND TO NEW AND EMERGING INFECTIOUS DISEASES, AS WELL AS TO MONITOR AND INVESTIGATE THE EPIDEMIOLOGY OF HEALTHCARE-ASSOCIATED INFECTIONS.
SURVEILLANCE PLATFORM FOR ENTERIC AND RESPIRATORY INFECTIOUS ORGANISMS AT THE VA (SUPERNOVA) IS AN ONGOING SURVEILLANCE PROJECT TO QUANTIFY THE BURDEN OF VIRAL GASTROENTERITIS AND ACUTE RESPIRATORY ILLNESS IN US VETERANS AFFAIRS PATIENT POPULATION.
THIS IS AN ON-GOING CLINICAL RESEARCH STUDY ON PEOPLE WITH TYPE II DIABETES. IT COMPARES FOUR DIFFERENT COMMONLY USED DIABETES MEDICATIONS IN COMBINATION WITH METFORMIN. THE STUDY IS LOOKING AT HOW WELL EACH COMBINATION WORKS TO CONTROL BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS IN ORDER TO DETERMINE WHICH COMBINATION WORKS THE BEST. IT IS ALSO LOOKING AT THE BENEFITS AND SIDE EFFECTS OF EACH COMBINATION.
