THE ATHENS AREA HUMANE SOCIETY RESCUES AND PROTECTS COMPANION ANIMALS BY PROVIDING FOR THEIR WELLBEING, UNITING THEM WITH LOVING HOMES, AND ADVOCATING FOR A COMPASSIONATE SOCIETY.

CLINIC PROGRAMS: SPAY AND NEUTER SERVICES, WELLNESS EXAMINATIONS AND PREVENTION, AND TRAP-SPAY/NEUTER-RETURN (TNR) PROGRAMS. IN FY22, AAHS PERFORMED 6,007 SPAY/NEUTER PROCEDURES FOR VOLUME AND PUBLIC CLIENTS AND PERFORMED TRAP-NEUTER-RETURN (TNR) SERVICES FOR 909 CAT PATIENTS.
CLINIC PROGRAMS: THE ORGANIZATION OFFERS SEVERAL CLINIC SERVICES INCLUDING SPAY AND NEUTER SERVICES, WELLNESS AND PREVENTION EXAMS, VACCINATIONS, AND A TRAP-NEUTER-RETURN ("TNR") PROGRAM. THROUGH THE LOW-COST CLINIC OFFERED TO VOLUME AND PUBLIC CLIENTS, THE ORGANIZATION IS ABLE TO CURB THE HOMELESS PET POPULATION AND PET SURRENDERS. THE TNR PROGRAM IS A TOOL THAT ASSISTS IN THE CONTROL OF COMMUNITY CAT POPULATIONS. IN 2022, THERE WERE 6,000 SPAYS AND NEUTERS, AND 1,300 COMMUNITY CATS TRAPPED, NEUTERED AND RETURNED.
SHELTER PROGRAMS: PET ADOPTION, FOSTER CARE, AND PET ENRICHMENT AND TRAINING SERVICES. IN FY21, AAHS ADOPTED 1,008 PETS 645 CATS AND 400 DOGS. FOSTER CAREGIVERS PROVIDED IN-HOME PRE-ADOPTION HOUSING FOR 602 PETS; FOSTER CAREGIVERS DONATED 32,620 HOURS OF VOLUNTEER SERVICE TO THE ANIMALS IN THEIR CARE.
SHELTER PROGRAMS: DOGS AND CATS ARE ADOPTED TO APPROVED ADOPTERS. ADOPTION FEES CHARGED TO CUSTOMERS HELP PROVIDE MEDICAL CARE, FOOD, AND SHELTER TO ANIMALS IN THE ORGANIZATION'S CARE. THE ORGANIZATION ENVISIONS A SOCIETY WHERE ALL DOGS AND CATS HAVE A LOVING HOME AND THE BOND BETWEEN PETS AND PEOPLE IS CELEBRATED. IN 2022, PETS WERE IN THE SHELTER ON AVERAGE FOR 22 DAYS BEFORE ADOPTION AND 1,160 PETS WERE ADOPTED INTO LOVING HOMES. ALSO, THERE WERE 551 PETS IN FOSTER CARE AND 1,721 PETS TRANSPORTED TO NORTHERN NO-KILL SHELTERS.
HUMAN-ANIMAL SUPPORT SERVICES: EMERGENCY 90-DAY PET HOUSING FOR PETS WHOSE OWNERS ARE ESCAPING DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, TRAFFICKING, AND/OR ABRUPT HOMELESSNESS; SUPPLEMENTAL PET FOOD DISTRIBUTION; RETENTION PROGRAMS AND MEDICAL ASSISTANCE. IN FY21, AAHS ASSISTED 25 PETS (18 DOGS AND 7 CATS) IN NEED OF EMERGENCY HOUSING AND MEDICAL CARE IN THE WAKE OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, TRAFFICKING, AND HOMELESSNESS. AAHS DISTRIBUTED 8,058 POUNDS OF PET FOOD TO FAMILIES EXPERIENCING FOOD INSECURITY AND HOMELESSNESS DUE TO NATURAL DISASTERS.
