MOUNTAIN VALLEY HOSPICE AND PALLIATIVE CARE STARTED IN 1983 THROUGH A GRASSROOTS EFFORT IN THE BASEMENT OF A CHURCH. TODAY OUR FOUNDERS' LEGACY HAS CARRIED OUT THE MISSION AND VISION OF THE ORGANIZATION SERVING MORE THAN 2,700 HOSPICE AND SERIOUS ILLNESS PATIENTS ANNUALLY. WE CONTINUE TO INVEST IN INNOVATIVE PROGRAMS THAT BRING VALUE AND COMFORT TO OUR PATIENTS LIVING WITH TERMINAL, SERIOUS AND ADVANCED ILLNESSES. 2020 WAS A YEAR OF GROWTH IN HOSPICE CARE FOR OUR ORGANIZATION. AVERAGE DAILY CENSUS INCREASED FROM 401 TO 439. DAYS OF CARE INCREASED FROM 146,210 TO 158,576.IN 2020, VOLUNTEER HOURS DECREASED SIGNIFICANTLY DUE TO THE COVID19 PANDEMIC. DURING THIS REPORTING PERIOD, CMS WAIVED THE 5% VOLUNTEER REQUIREMENT IN BOTH NC AND VA. VOLUNTEER SERVICES TRADITIONALLY PROVIDES SIGNIFICANT COST SAVINGS FOR MVHPC. DURING THE PANDEMIC, IN-HOUSE PAID STAFF PERFORMED MANY OF THE PRIOR VOLUNTEER TASKS. VOLUNTEER SERVICES RECRUITMENT WORKED DURING THE PANDEMIC TO MAINTAIN REMOTE RELATIONSHIPS WITH VOLUNTEERS. THE PLAN FOR 2020 FOCUSED HEAVILY ON RECRUITMENT PLANS AFTER PANDEMIC RESTRICTIONS LESSENED. OUR STRATEGIC GOALS WERE FOCUSED ON QUALITY OF CARE, GROWTH, MARKET SHARE, IMPROVED FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE IN OUR INPATIENT UNITS, DECREASED EMPLOYEE TURNOVER, FOCUSED AR DAYS MANAGEMENT, IMPROVED LEADERSHIP PERFORMANCE, AND INCREASED SERIOUS ILLNESS PROGRAM SUPPORT.
