OUR MISSION IS TO RESTORE NATIVE COASTAL HABITATS AND TO EDUCATE OTHERS AS TO EFFECTIVE, EFFICIENT METHODS OF HABITAT RESTORATION. IN JULY 2013, WE ASSUMED CONTROL OF THE KEYS ENVIRONMENTAL RESTORATION FUND (KERF) PREVIOUSLY SPONSORED BY AUDUBON SOCIETY. THE PROGRAM HAS BEEN RENAMED KEYS RESTORATION FUND (KRF) AND IS OVERSEEN BY THE U.S. ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS. THIS IS AN IN-LIEU FEE PROGRAM FUNDED BY FEES THAT PERMITTEES MUST PAY FOR INCURRED DAMAGES TO THE ENVIRONMENT FROM CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITY. KRF USES THESE FUNDS FOR ADMINISTRATION, PROJECT INDENTIFICATION, PERMITTING, IMPLEMENTATION AND MONITORING OF LARGE SCALE MITIGATION PROJECTS TO OFFSET IMPACTS FROM CONSTRUCTION. ALL FEES COLLECTED AND MITIGATION PROJECTS ARE LOCATED WITHING THE SERVICE AREAS OF THE UPPER AND LOWER FLORIDA KEYS.

PROJECT: FRUIT FARM CREEK - RESTORATION/EDUCATION: THE STATE OF FLORIDA IS FUNDING THE RESTORATION OF THIS PROJECT. WORK BEGAN NOVEMBER 2021. CRG IS WORKING WITH THE LAND OWNERS TO DEVELOP AN EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM TO REPORT AND SHARE DATA COLLECTED FROM THIS PROJECT. THE PROGRAM WILL PROVIDE LESSIONS LEARNED FROM ON THE GROUND RESTORATION OF MANGROVES FOR COASTAL RESILIENCE.
PELICAN ISLAND OYSTER REEF PROJECT PHASE V: CRG RECEIVED GRANT FUNDING TO IMPLEMENT A SECOND OYSTER REEF RESORATION PROJECT AT PELICAN ISLAND NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE. WORK WAS COMPLETED IN NOVEMBER 2021. THE PLACEMENT OF OYSTER SHELL FOR THIS PROJECT WAS COORDINATED WITH LOCAL VOLUNTEERS TO PROVIDE HANDS-ON LEARNING AND INTEREST IN ENVIRONMENTAL RESTORATION. PELICAN ISLAND NWR ROUTINELY PROVIDES EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES THROUGH SIGHESEEING TOURS FOR THE PUBLIC TO ENGAGE IN ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION. THE NEWLY CONSTRUCTED OYSTER REEF WILL BE AN ADDITION TO THIS PROGRAM.
KEYS RESTORATION FUND IN-LIEU FEE PROGRAM: SPONSORED PROGRAM KEYS RESTORATION FUND (KRF) CONTINUES TO WORK WITH THE U.S. ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS TO DEVELOP PROJECTS FUNDED BY MONIES IN TRUST TO OFFSET WETLAND IMPACTS IN THE FLORIDA KEYS. PROGRAM FUNDING RECEIVED DURING 2021 IS CURRENTLY BEING PLANNED FOR AN ADDITIONAL 2 PROJECTS IN THE FLORIDA KEYS FOR THE RESTORATION OF THE ENVIRONMENT. THESE PROJECTS WILL PROVIDE EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR VISITING PUBLIC AT PENNEKAMP STATE PARK AND KEY DEER NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE. CRG/KRF ATTENDS PUBLIC MEETINGS AND CONSERVATION GROUPS TO CONTINUE EDUCATING THE LOCAL RESIDENTS ABOUT WETLAND CONSERVATION AND PROJECTS. NEW WEBSITES ARE UNDER DEVELOPMENT FOR IMPROVED ACCESS TO EDUCATIONAL INFORMATION INCLUDING THE ABILITY TO DOWNLOAD 150 SCIENTIFIC PAPERS AT NO COST. IN 2021, CRG HAS WORKED WIOTH THE ROOKERY BAY NATIONAL ESTUARINE RESEARCH RESERVE ON THEIR MANGROVE SCIENCE COLLABOTATIVE WHICH BRINGS RESEARCHERS FROM SOUTH FLORIDA AND PUERTO RICO TOGETHER TO ENGAGE IN RESEARCH PLANNING AND PUBLIC OUTREACH AND EDUCATION.
