TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF LIFE OF THE RESIDENTS OF HOPEWELL, VIRGINIA BY PROVIDING EMERGENCY FOOD AND OTHER NECESSARY ITEMS TO NEEDY INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES.

THE HOPEWELL FOOD PANTRY (HFP) WAS ORGANIZED BY A GROUP OF LOCAL CHURCHES IN JUNE 1983 TO PROVIDE EMERGENCY FOOD TO INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES WHO WERE IN TEMPORARY CRISIS, PRIMARILY WAITING FOR THEIR FOOD STAMPS TO BEGIN. THIS MISSION HAS CONTINUED FOR OVER 30 YEARS AND HAS BEEN EXPANDED TO SERVE ALL HOPEWELL FAMILIES IN NEED OF FOOD. IN FY 2022, THE HFP PROVIDED A WEEK OR MORE SUPPLY OF FOOD TO 4,484 FAMILY UNITS, TOTALING 13,224 CLIENTS. THE NUMBER OF CLIENTS SERVED WAS ON PAR WITH THE NUMBER OF CLIENTS WE SERVED IN THE LAST SIX YEARS, WHICH WERE: 12,087, 13,364, 12,535, 11,942, 12,041 AND 11,088 RESPECTIVELY. FOR THE 12,087 CLIENTS SERVED IN FY 2021, A TOTAL OF AT LEAST 277,000 MEALS WERE PROVIDED AT AN ESTIMATED VALUE OF APPROXIMATELY $537,000.
EFFECTIVE NOVEMBER 2010, THE SHEPHERD'S PLACE BECAME A PROGRAM OF THE HOPEWELL FOOD PANTRY. IN 1978, THE SHEPHERD'S PLACE WAS STARTED AT FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH TO PROVIDE CLOTHES FOR NEEDY INDIVIDUALS. DONATED USED CLOTHES ARE PROVIDED FREE TO PERSONS OR FAMILIES UPON A REFERRAL FROM HOPEWELL SOCIAL SERVICES, AREA CHURCHES, SCHOOLS, THE AMERICAN RED CROSS AND THE SALVATION ARMY. CLOTHES ARE ALSO SOLD FOR VERY LOW PRICES IN ORDER TO HELP LOCAL NEEDY FAMILIES AND TO SUSTAIN THE OPERATIONS AND HELP FUND THE OPERATIONS OF THE HOPEWELL FOOD PANTRY AS WELL AS TO PROVIDE SUPPORT TO THE SALVATION ARMY AND THE FOSTER CARE ENRICHMENT CHRISTMAS PROGRAM.
