Part 3
THE BERLIN U.S. MILITARY VETERANS ASSOC., INC., BUSMVA SHARES SIMILAR QUALITIES, GOALS AND TRAITS WITH THE LARGER VETERANS' ORGANIZATIONS, SUCH AS THE VFW AND THE AMERICAN LEGION. SPECIFICALLY, WE EXIST TO ATTRACT THOSE VETERANS WHO SERVED DURING THE COLD WAR YEARS BETWEEN 1945 UNTIL 1994 AND WHOSE SERVICE WAS IN THE ISOLATED CITY OF WEST BERLIN, WEST GERMANY. OUR POOL OF PROSPECTS IS MUCH SMALLER AND HAS A FINITE LIFE SPAN THEREFORE, WE TRY TO MAKE MEMBERSHIP, JOINING AND RETENTION, AN ATTRACTIVE AND INVITING CHOICE. THIS PAST YEAR THERE WAS NO REUNION DUE TO COVID-19. IT TAKES THE WILLINGNESS AND DEDICATION OF OUR ELECTED DIRECTORS AND OFFICERS, UNPAID VOLUNTEERS, TO KEEP THE SPARK ALIVE WHICH KEEPS THE ORGANIZATION RELEVANT. TO THAT END SUCH ENDEAVORS AS PUBLISHING A QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER, THE BUSMVA OBSERVER, GETS ACCOMPLISHED. AN ACTIVE WEB PRESENCE IS MAINTAINED AT WWW.BERLINVETERANS.COM, AND WITH SOCIAL MEDIA, SUCH AS FACEBOOK OFFERING OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE GENERAL MEMBERSHIP TO INTERACT WITH ONE ANOTHER. OUR MISSION DURING THE COLD WAR ERA WAS TO KEEP THE PEOPLE AND THE WEST BERLIN SECTOR FREE AND SAFE. THAT MISSION AND OUR COLLECTIVE SERVICE WAS ACCOMPLISHED WITH THE FALL OF THE BERLIN WALL IN 1989. THE TWO BERLINS AND TWO GERMANYS ARE UNIFIED AS ONE TODAY, AND IN NO SMALL PART TO THIS GROUPS EXISTENCE. THE BERLIN U.S. MILITARY VETERANS ASSOCIATION WAS FORMED TO PROMOTE COMRADESHIP AMONG THOSE WHO SERVED WITH THE BERLIN BRIGADE. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS LATER WE CONTINUE TO MAINTAIN THAT FOCUS.
