AAGP ENHANCES THE KNOWLEDGE BASE AND STANDARDS OF PRACTICE IN GERIATRIC PSYCHIATRY THROUGH EDUCATION AND RESEARCH AND BY ADVOCATING FOR MEETING THE MENTAL HEALTH NEEDS OF OLDER AMERICANS.

JOURNAL AND OTHER PUBLICATIONS - THE ASSOCIATION PROVIDES ITS MEMBERS AND OTHER HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS WITH INFORMATION ON CURRENT DEVELOPMENTS IN THE FIELD OF GERIATRIC PSYCHIATRY BY PUBLISHING A MONTHLY PEER REVIEWED SCIENTIFIC JOURNAL, "AMERICAN JOURNAL FOR GERIATRIC PSYCHIATRY" WHICH INCLUDES ARTICLES ON NEW RESEARCH AND DATA THAT ENABLE HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS TO PROVIDE EVIDENCE BASED CARE TO THE OLDER ADULT POPULATION. THE ASSOCIATION SUPPORTS CONSUMER EDUCATION TO INDIVIDUALS AND HEALTH CARE CENTERS UPON REQUEST THROUGH INDIVIDUAL REFERRALS, ORGANIZATIONAL REFERRALS, AND BASIC INFORMATION ON LATE LIFE MENTAL ILLNESSES, AS WELL AS CAREGIVERS SUPPORT RESOURCES SUCH AS PAMPHLETS AND OTHER PUBLICATIONS. IN ADDITION THE ASSOCIATION DEVELOPED THE INTERNET GERIATRIC PSYCHIATRY SELF-ASSESSMENT PROGRAM TO PROVIDE A VEHICLE FOR CONTINUING EDUCATION OF THE PSYCHIATRIST IN CLINICAL PRACTICE. THE SELF-STUDY QUESTIONS, ANSWERS, AND CRITIQUES THAT COMPRISE THE PROGRAM ARE BASED ON THE CURRENT MEDICAL LITERATURE. THE IGPSAP PROGRAM IS DESIGNED AS A SELF-STUDY EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM. IT IS NOT INTENDED AS AN EXAMINATION.
ANNUAL MEETING AND EDUCATION- THE ASSOCIATION'S ANNUAL MEETING IS A NATIONAL CONFERENCE THAT BRINGS TOGETHER PSYCHIATRISTS AND OTHER HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CARE OF OLDER ADULTS WITH MENTAL HEALTH DISORDERS. THIS MEETING PROVIDES THE OPPORTUNITY FOR COLLABORATION, EDUCATIONAL EVENTS, ACCESS TO NEW MATERIALS AND INFORMATION, RESEARCH RESULTS AND PRESENTATIONS, AND ACCESS TO EXPERTS IN THE FIELD OF GERIATRIC PSYCHIATRY. THE ASSOCIATION SPONSORS A SCHOLARS PROGRAM FOR MEDICAL RESIDENTS AND MEDICAL STUDENTS TO SUPPORT TRAVEL TO THE MEETING, AS WELL AS ACCREDITED CONTINUED EDUCATION PROGRAMS FOR PROFESSIONALS.
