D.C. BAR PRO BONO CENTER PROVIDES FREE LEGAL SERVICES THROUGH PRO BONO LAWYERS TO LOW-INCOME INDIVIDUALS, NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS AND SMALL BUSINESSES IN THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA. THE PRO BONO CENTER ALSO RECRUITS AND TRAINS LAWYERS AND LAW FIRMS TO PROVIDE BUSINESS AND TRANSACTIONAL LEGAL SERVICES TO COMMUNITY-BASED NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS AND SMALL, DISADVANTAGED BUSINESSES.

THE D.C. BAR PRO BONO CENTER PROVIDES LEGAL ASSISTANCE TO LOW-INCOME D.C. RESIDENTS THROUGH BOTH IN-PERSON AND REMOTE SERVICES. THE PRO BONO CENTER RECRUITS, TRAINS AND SUPPORTS VOLUNTEER LAWYERS WHO PROVIDE REPRESENTATION IN HOUSING, FAMILY LAW, PUBLIC BENEFITS, PERSONAL INJURY DEFENSE, BANKRUPTCY, AND CONSUMER LAW CASES. IN FY21, THE CENTER PROVIDED ONGOING FULL REPRESENTATION ON THESE MATTERS TO 175 NEW CLIENTS AND SAME-DAY REPRESENTATION TO 517 CLIENTS, INCLUDING 161 LITIGANTS IN THE LANDLORD TENANT BRANCH OF D.C. SUPERIOR COURT THROUGH ITS HOUSING ATTORNEY OF THE DAY PROGRAM AND 356 LITIGANTS IN THE DOMESTIC RELATIONS BRANCH THROUGH ITS FAMILY LAW ASSISTANCE NETWORK. THE CENTER ALSO HOSTS VIRTUAL ADVICE AND REFERRAL WALK-IN CLINICS WHERE 168 INDIVIDUALS RECEIVED LEGAL ASSISTANCE ON A BROAD RANGE OF CIVIL LEGAL MATTERS. THE CENTER ALSO MAINTAINS SUPERIOR COURT-BASED RESOURCE CENTERS TO SERVE PRO SE LITIGANTS IN LANDLORD TENANT AND CONSUMER LAW MATTERS. IN FY21, THESE CENTERS SERVED 1,662 PEOPLE. THE CENTER'S NEWLY LAUNCHED LANDLORD TENANT LEGAL ASSISTANCE NETWORK ALSO PROVIDED 1,031 INDIVIDUALS WITH REMOTE LEGAL ASSISTANCE IN HOUSING MATTERS IN FY21.
THE NONPROFIT & SMALL BUSINESS PROGRAMS MATCH NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS AND SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS WITH PRO BONO COUNSEL TO MEET THEIR TRANSACTIONAL LEGAL NEEDS. IN FY21, NPSB MATCHED 52 NONPROFITS WITH ONGOING PRO BONO COUNSEL AND PROVIDED 274 NONPROFITS WITH ONE-ON-ONE BRIEF ADVICE VIA VIRTUAL LEGAL CLINICS AND WEEKLY "OFFICE HOURS" CONSULTATIONS. THE NPSB ALSO PROVIDED TRAINING TO 3,839 NONPROFIT AND SMALL BUSINESS REPRESENTATIVES AND THE VOLUNTEER ATTORNEYS THAT ASSIST THEM. THE NPSB ADDITIONALLY SERVED 584 SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS THROUGH ITS RECURRING SMALL BUSINESS BRIEF ADVICE LEGAL CLINICS.
ONLINE AND OTHER PROJECTS. IN FY21, THE PRO BONO CENTER PROVIDED OTHER SERVICES THAT INCLUDED LAWHELP.ORG/DC, A WEBSITE THAT PROVIDES LEGAL AND REFERRAL INFORMATION TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC; THE LEGAL INFORMATION HELP LINE, WHICH PROVIDES RECORDED LEGAL INFORMATION 24 HOURS A DAY IN MULTIPLE LANGUAGES; AND PROBONO.NET/DC, A FREE ON-LINE RESOURCE FOR PRO BONO LAWYERS AND LEGAL SERVICE ATTORNEYS WITH OVER 9,400 REGISTERED USERS. IN FY21, THERE WERE OVER 1 MILLION PAGE VIEWS ON LAWHELP.ORG/DC AND THE HELP LINE ANSWERED 12,559 CALLS.
