PARTNERSHIP FOR THE DELAWARE ESTUARY, INC. (PDE), HOST OF THE DELAWARE ESTUARY PROGRAM, LEADS COLLABORATIVE, SCIENCE-BASED EFFORTS TO IMPROVE THE DELAWARE RIVER AND BAY, WHICH COVERS PORTIONS OF DELAWARE, NEW JERSEY, AND PENNSYLVANIA.

MONITORED AND MAINTAINED 11 LIVING SHORELINE INSTALLATIONS IN NJ, PA AND DE, INCLUDING SITES AT MONEY ISLAND, NJ, MISPILLION HARBOR, DE, AND BARTRAM'S GARDEN ON THE SCHUYLKILL RIVER IN PA. FRESHWATER MUSSEL RESEARCH CONTINUED IN 2021, INCLUDING EXPLORING THE USE OF THESE ANIMALS TO IMPROVE WATER QUALITY IN STORMWATER PONDS AND LAKES. PLANNING CONTINUED FOR THE NEW FRESHWATER MUSSEL HATCHERY, WHICH WILL BE CONSTRUCTED ON THE GROUNDS OF BARTRAM'S GARDEN IN PHILADELPHIA, PA. THE ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN FIRM THAT WAS HIRED BEGAN WORKING, AND IT'S ANTICIPATED THAT CONSTRUCTION WILL BEGIN IN LATE 2023.IN THE AREAS OF EDUCATION AND OUTREACH, PDE HAD TO CONTINUE TO RETHINK THE WAY THAT WE OFFER THESE PROGRAMS AS A RESULT ON THE COVID PANDEMIC. PDE CONTINUED TO CONDUCT SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH, WITH MOST OF THIS WORK TAKING PLACE VIRTUALLY. PDE LED AND PARTICIPATED IN NUMEROUS OUTREACH EVENTS IN 2021 INCLUDING WILMINGTON DELAWARE'S EARTH AND ARBOR DAY CELEBRATION AND THE DELAWARE RIVER FESTIVAL. THROUGH THESE AND OTHER PROGRAMS, PDE REACHED THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE WITH INFORMATION ABOUT PDE'S WORK AND THE IMPORTANCE OF PROTECTING THE DELAWARE RIVER BAY AND THEIR TRIBUTARIES.
