THE MISSION OF THE HOPE BORDER INSTITUTE IS TO APPLY THE PERSPECTIVE OF CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING TO ADVANCE HUMAN RIGHTS AND SOCIAL JUSTICE IN THE BORDERLANDS.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENTTHE HOPE BORDER INSTITUTE PROVIDES TRAINING AND LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT TO COMMUNITY LEADERS AT THE US-MEXICO BORDER AS WELL AS AFFECTED PERSONS AND COMMUNITIES TO OVERCOME THE STRUCTURAL CAUSES OF POVERTY AND INJUSTICE. IN 2021, HOPE BROUGHT TOGETHER AN INTERNATIONAL CONVENING OF FAITH LEADERS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE USCCB TO ADDRESS ASYLUM, THE RIGHT TO MIGRATE AND THE DRIVER OF MIGRATION. ADDITIONALLY, HOPE WORKED TO ORGANIZE LOCAL GRASSROOTS AND FAITH COMMUNITIES IN CENTRAL AMERICA AND MEXICO TO ANALYZE AND UNDERSTAND THE ROOT CAUSES OF MIGRATION AND ORGANIZE FOR STRUCTURAL CHANGE.
PROMOTING HUMAN RIGHTS AT THE BORDERTHE HOPE BORDER INSTITUTE IS THE LEADING STRATEGY CENTER FOR FAITH AND COMMUNITY LEADERS WORKING TO PROMOTE SOLIDARITY AND A MORE JUST SOCIETY AT THE US-MEXICO BORDER. IN 2021, HOPE WORKED SUCCESSFULLY TO PREPARE THE BINATIONAL COMMUNITY OF EL PASO AND CIUDAD JUAREZ TO RECEIVE MIGRANTS AND REFUGEES FOLLOWING THE US GOVERNMENT'S DECISION TO ROLLBACK REMAIN IN MEXICO AND RELATED POLICIES LIMITING ACCESS TO ASYLUM. HOPE ENGAGED THE GOVERNMENT AND LOCAL STAKEHOLDERS TO SUCCESSFULLY PROVIDE HUMANITARIAN AID AND RECEIVE THOUSANDS OF ASYLUM SEEKERS WITH DIGNITY AND HUMANITY AT THE BORDER.
RESEARCHTHE HOPE BORDER INSTITUTE PRODUCED HIGH QUALITY RESEARCH ON STRUCTURAL INJUSTICE AND THE REALITIES OF MIGRATION AT THE US-MEXICO BORDER. IN 2021, HOPE PUBLISHED NUMEROUS PUBLICATIONS OF ORIGINAL RESEARCH DOCUMENTING THE IMPACTS OF ASYLUM-DENYING POLICIES SUCH AS REMAIN IN MEXICO AND TITLE 42, IN ADDITION TO RESEARCH ON THE PSYCHOLOGICAL RESILIENCE OF MIGRANT FAMILIES AND CHILDREN, AND THE ROOT CAUSES OF MIGRATION.
