TO INCREASE THE AVAILABILITY AND QUALITY OF AFRICAN AMERICAN ARTS AND CULTURE

BLACK ARTS MKE HIRED TWO NEW FULL-TIME EMPLOYEES TO ASSIST WITH ADMINISTRATIVE PROJECTS AND DIGITAL MARKETING INITIATIVES. OVER 100 PERFORMING BIPOC ARTISTS WERE HIRED FOR OUR PROGRAMMING WHICH PROVIDED EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR INDEPENDENT CONTRACTORS ($273K ARTIST 1099 EARNINGS). THIS REPRESENTS A 15 PERCENT INCREASE OVER OUR 2019 PRE-PANDEMIC HIGH OF $240K PER YEAR. WE CONTINUE TO LOOK FOR INNOVATIVE WAYS TO IMPROVE OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCIES. IN 2023, PROGRAMMING INCLUDED OUR SUCCESSFUL "THEATRE FOR YOUNG AUDIENCES," A 3-WEEK MUSICAL REPERTORY SERIES DURING BLACK HISTORY MONTH. "HIP HOP HOORAY!" CELEBRATED THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF HIP HOP, WRITTEN BY A LOCAL PLAYWRIGHT AND PERFORMED BY AFRICAN-AMERICAN MKE-BASED ACTORS. OUR 7TH ANNUAL I AM. YOUNG, GIFTED & BLACK PERFORMING ARTS SUMMER CAMP FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS FEATURED OR A MONTH-LONG PERFORMING ARTS COURSE FOCUSING ON ALL ASPECTS OF MUSICAL THEATRE INCLUDING BACKSTAGE OPPORTUNITIES. WE INCREASED OUR YOUTH INTERN PROGRAM BY FOUR NEW HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH. THESE PAID INTERNS WORK WITH BLACK ARTS MKE TEAM THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. WE EXPANDED OUR SUCCESSFUL ANNUAL MKE BLACK THEATRE FESTIVAL TO A FULL 3-WEEK REPERTORY SCHEDULE FEATURING FULL THEATRICAL PRODUCTIONS, AN AUDITION MASTERCLASS, AND A POPULAR SPOKEN WORD EVENT. WE HELD THESE AFFORDABLE EVENTS THROUGHOUT THE COMMUNITY IN AUGUST. FINALLY, WE HELD OUR 8TH ANNUAL SIGNATURE PRODUCTION OF BLACK NATIVITY BY LANGSTON HUGHES AT THE END OF THE YEAR.FINALLY, WE CONTINUE TO GROW OUR COMMUNITY AND PATRON AUDIENCES VIA DIGITAL METHODS INCLUDING OUR NEW "GREEN" DIGITAL PROGRAMS, SOCIAL MEDIA AND WEBSITE.
