RESTORATION: WORKING WITH THE WASHINGTON STATE DEPARTMENT OF ECOLOGY AND COMMUNITY PARTNERS, OLYMPIA COALITION FOR ECOSYSTEMS PRESERVATION (OCEP) REMOVED INVASIVE SPECIES FROM APPROXIMATELY 2.5 ACRES FROM WEST BAY WOODS, AN URBAN FOREST CONSERVATION AREA. THIS INCLUDED SIX WEEKS OF WASHINGTON CONSERVATION CORP CREW TIME AND THREE COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER WORK DAYS. IN ADDITION TO WEED REMOVAL, OCEP BUILT TRAILS AND PLANTED OVER 1000 NATIVE PLANTS (INCLUDING NATIVE TREES AND COASTAL REDWOODS) INTO A STEEP, ONE ACRE SITE. FINALLY, OCEP INITIATED THE PERMITTING AND DESIGN PROCESS FOR THREE SEPARATE GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE INSTALLATIONS TO TREAT STORMWATER BEFORE IT REACHES PUGET SOUND.
ACQUISITION: IN APRIL 2021 OCEP ACQUIRED 1.75 ACRES OF DEGRADED SHORELINE FOREST. THE ACQUISITION COST IS $397,426 WHICH IS INCLUDED IN THE FIXED ASSETS ON THE BALANCE SHEET. THIS PROPERTY PRESENTS A UNIQUE DESIGN CHALLENGE AND AN OPPORTUNITY FOR MEANINGFUL STORMWATER DETOXIFICATION. PROPERTY ACQUISITION RELATED WORK TO THIS SITE AND OTHER PORTIONS OF WEST BAY WOODS INCLUDED SURVEYS FOR PROPERTY AND BOUNDARY LINE ADJUSTMENTS, ENGINEERING ASSESSMENTS AND DESIGN, AND SOIL TESTS.
