WE CREATE CONNECTIONS, EMPOWERING EVERYONE IN THE AUTISM COMMUNITY WITH THE RESOURCES NEEDED TO LIVE FULLY.

IN 2022, THE AUTISM SOCIETY OF GREATER AKRON (ASGA) EXPERIENCED SIGNIFICANT GROWTH, SERVING SOME 15,800 MEMBERS IN OUR SERVICE AREA, WHICH INCLUDES INDIVIDUALS IN SUMMIT, STARK, PORTAGE, MEDINA AND WAYNE COUNTIES. SOCIAL CLUBS, WHICH WERE STARTED DURING THE PANDEMIC TO CONNECT AUTISTIC INDIVIDUALS ONLINE TO EACH OTHER AND TO THE COMMUNITY, MORE THAN DOUBLED IN PARTICIPATION THIS YEAR DUE TO THE EXPANSION OF THE PROGRAM TO IN-PERSON MEET-UPS AND ACROSS THE LIFESPAN. ASGA'S ADAPTED FAMILY EVENTS SERVED 1,612 PEOPLE, MORE THAN 70% MORE PEOPLE THAN 2021. WE ALSO WERE RENEWED AS A MEMBER OF THE OHIO FAMILY NETWORK, THE OHIO DEPARTMENT OF DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES COLLABORATIVE THAT CONNECTS INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES TO LOCAL RESOURCES. IN ADDITION, HELPLINE INQUIRIES, OUR FREE INFORMATION & REFERRAL TO SERVICES PROGRAM, ANSWERED MORE THAN 40% OF QUESTIONS FROM OUR COMMUNITY ABOUT NEEDED SERVICES AND ISSUES. OVER 500 NEWLY DIAGNOSED ROADMAPS WERE DISTRIBUTED TO FAMILIES NEW TO AUTISM AS WELL.
EDUCATION IS A CORE SERVICE OF ASGA, SUPPORTING INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES AS THEY NAVIGATE THE AUTISM JOURNEY. IN 2022, ASGA JOINED THE AUTISM SOCIETY OF AMERICA'S VACCINE EDUCATION INITIATIVE, SPECIFICALLY SUPPORTING INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES WITH EDUCATIONAL INFORMATION AND SUPPORTED ACCESS TO VACCINE CLINICS TO HELP ENSURE EQUITY AS IT RELATED TO COVID-19. WE HELD ICAN BIKE ONCE AGAIN, AND, PROVIDED 862 LOCAL WATER SAFETY LESSONS. THE OHIO DEPARTMENT OF DISABILITIES COUNCIL AWARDED ASGA A FIVE-YEAR GRANT TO EXPAND OUR LIFE-SAVING WATER SAFETY PROGRAM INTO OTHER COUNTIES, AND EVENTUALLY, STATE-WIDE. OUR EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOPS COVERED TOPICS SUCH AS LEARNING ABOUT AUTISM WHEN DIAGNOSED AS AN ADULT, FUTURE PLANNING SERIES THAT COVERED GUARDIANSHIP, SPECIAL NEEDS TRUSTS, AND SSI/SSDI.
AS A MEMBER OF THE AUTISM SOCIETY OF OHIO, A COLLABORATION OF THE SIX OHIO AFFILIATES OF THE AUTISM SOCIETY OF AMERICA, ASGA WORKED WITH THE OHIO STATE LEGISLATURE TO PASS A BILL TO EXPAND THE SILVER ALERT. NOW NAMED THE "MISSING ADULT ALERT," THIS PROGRAM NOW INCLUDES PEOPLE WITH AUTISM OR OTHER MENTAL IMPAIRMENTS. THE ALERT SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO COORDINATE THE INFORMATION TO THE MEDIA AND PUBLIC IN A TIMELY MANNER TO HELP FIND PEOPLE WHO ARE IN DANGER AND IS RUN BY THE OHIO ATTORNEY GENERAL'S OFFICE. ASGA CONTINUES TO RAISE AWARENESS AND ACCEPTANCE OF AUTISM BY JOINING THE AUTISM SOCIETY OF AMERICA AND ITS FELLOW AFFILIATES ACROSS THE COUNTRY, IN APRIL, AUTISM ACCEPTANCE MONTH, TO ADVOCATE FOR IMPROVED SERVICES AND PROGRAMS TO SUPPORT INDIVIDUALS WITH AUTISM.
