TODAY WE SUPPORT NEW ARRIVALS THROUGH EDUCATION, RELATIONSHIPS, AND COMMUNITY SO THEY CAN THRIVE IN THEIR NEW HOME. IN THE FUTURE, WE WILL CREATE A COMMUNITY OF OPEN HEARTS, HELPING HANDS AND SUPPORTIVE SYSTEMS WHERE STRANGERS BECOME FRIENDS AND WE ALL THRIVE.

Part 3 - Line 4a

ADULT ESL AND CITIZENSHIP CLASSES--THREE QUALIFIED TEACHERS, 25 VOLUNTEERS, AND 2 PART-TIME ADMINISTRATOR PROVIDE ENGLISH LANGUAGE ACQUISITION CLASSES TO MORE THAN 60 STUDENTS FOR 12 HOURS OF INSTRUCTION PER WEEK. SOME STUDENTS ARE NOT LITERATE IN THEIR NATIVE LANGUAGE. TEACHERS TEACH ENGLISH AND LIFE SKILLS INCLUDING DIGITAL LITERACY, AND HELP PREPARE STUDENTS FOR THE US CITIZENSHIP TEST.


HIGH SCHOOL TUTORING- NEW ARRIVAL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS FACE A PARTICULAR CHALLENGE IN BEING ABLE TO ACQUIRE THE LANGUAGE AND ACADEMIC SKILLS NEEDED FOR A HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA IN A TIMELY MANNER. THEY ALSO BENEFIT FROM ASSISTANCE WITH APPLYING FOR JOBS, FILLING OUT THE FAFSA AND APPLYING FOR COLLEGE. WE USE VOLUNTEERS AND STAFF TO HELP WITH THESE NEEDS. DURING THE 2021-2022 SCHOOL YEAR, WE WORKED WITH 15 VOLUNTEERS AND 1 STAFF PERSON TO HELP 32 HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AND 20 MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS WITH HOMEWORK, JOB SKILLS AND SEARCH, DRIVING SKILLS, AND CULTURAL AND LANGUAGE ACQUISITION.


AFTER SCHOOL HOMEWORK AND ENRICHMENT PROGRAM- WE SERVE OVER 60 SCHOOL AGED REFUGEE CHILDREN, GRADES K-12, HELPING THEM COMPLETE HOMEWORK TASKS AND ENGAGE IN ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES. ALL STUDENTS ARE ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS, AND MANY HAVE HAD INTERRUPTED OR INADEQUATE FORMAL EDUCATION IN REFUGEE CAMPS. 1 FULL TIME, 3 PART TIME STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS RUN THIS PROGRAM.
