SACRED VALLEY HEALTH IS A COMMUNITY-BASED, PUBLIC HEALTH ORGANIZATION THAT PARTNERS WITH RURAL, INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES IN THE ANDES OF PERU. OUR CORE PURPOSE IS TO IMPROVE THE HEALTH AND WELL-BEING OF THESE UNDERSERVED, MARGINALIZED COMMUNITIES THROUGH A COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKER PROGRAM THAT EMPOWERS LOCAL WOMEN WITH EDUCATION, RESOURCES, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, AND ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITIES. WE USE A COMMUNITY PARTNER APPROACH, WORKING WITH REMOTE VILLAGES TO INCREASE ACCESS TO HEALTH KNOWLEDGE AND HEALTH CARE. WE HAVE DEVELOPED A CUSTOMIZED CURRICULUM, DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR INDIGENOUS HEALTH WORKERS, THAT FOCUSES ON PREVENTATIVE HEALTH MEASURES FOR INDIVIDUAL BEHAVIOR CHANGE AND HEALTH ISSUES RELEVANT TO THIS REGION OF PERU SUCH AS FIRST AID, MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH, RESPIRATORY DISEASE, DIARRHEA, NUTRITION, AND PATIENT ADVOCACY. SVH CURRENTLY WORKS WITH 56 LOCAL CHWS AND EMPLOYS 8 ADVANCED CHWS AS PART-TIME TRAINERS AND TEACHERS. SINCE ITS INCEPTION, SVH HAS TRAINED 94 PROMOTORAS, HAS PROMOTED 42 CHWS FROM THE INTERMEDIATE TO THE ADVANCED LEVEL OF THE BASIC HEALTH EDUCATION AND PROMOTION PROGRAM, AND HAS PROVIDED EDUCATION TO MORE THAN 2000 COMMUNITY MEMBERS.
