NAMED ONE OF THE 11 SMALL-BUT-MIGHTY DANCE COMPANIES OUTSIDE OF LA AND NYC BY DANCE SPIRIT MAGAZINE DISSONANCE DANCE THEATRE IS A WASHINGTON DC-BASED PROFESSIONAL DANCE COMPANY FOUNDED IN 2007 BY SHAWN SHORT. SINCE ITS INCEPTION DISSONANCE DANCE THEATRE HAS PERFORMED FOR LOCAL AND NATIONAL AUDIENCES ON THE EAST COAST AND MIDWEST STATES. EVOKING EMOTIONAL EXPERIENCES IN THE AUDIENCES WE TOUCH DISSONANCE'S CUTTING-EDGE REPERTOIRE FEATURES WORKS THAT ARE SOCIALLY AND VISUALLY APPEALING TO AUDIENCES WHILE REMAINING TRUE TO ITS MISSION; CHALLENGING THE AUDIENCE'S ASSUMPTIONS ABOUT THE HUMAN EXPERIENCE THROUGH DANCE. FY2023 NGOMA CENTER FOR DANCE ATTENDS THE INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF BLACKS IN DANCE 2023 CONFERENCE IN MONTREAL CANADA - PROVIDING COMPANY CONTRACTS AND STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES TO APPROXIMATELY 100 BLACK AND BROWN DANCERS. DISSONANCE DANCE THEATRE CONDUCTS COMPANY AUDITIONS IN THE US AND CANADA WITH SEVERAL AUDITIONS AT JOMDC STUDIOS APPROX. 80 DANCERS IN-PERSON 400 ONLINE - SUCCESSFULLY SECURING 12 PROFESSIONAL DANCERS FOR ITS FIRST SEASON AFTER THE COVID PANDEMIC.
THE OFFICIAL SCHOOL OF DISSONANCE DANCE THEATRE DC'S ONLY AFRICAN-AMERICAN MANAGED AND NATIONALLY-RECOGNIZED CONTEMPORARY BALLET. SERVING OVER 200 STUDENTS ANNUALLY SINCE 2014 THE NGOMA SCHOOL IS EMERGING AS A WASHINGTON DC AREA DANCE-SCHOOL DESTINATION FOR STUDENTS INTERESTED IN A PROFESSIONAL CONCERT DANCE CAREER. NGOMA SERVES STUDENTS AS YOUNG AS FIVE YEARS OLD TO YOUNG ADULTS WHO RECEIVED A LATE START TO THEIR PROFESSIONAL DANCE TRAINING. DANCE CLASSES WORKSHOPS MASTERCLASSES AND AUDITIONS ARE FACILITATED AT UNIV OF MARYLAND COLLEGE PARK. FY2023 - IN 2023 THE SCHOOL PROGRAM OBSERVED AN 80% IN STUDENT RETENTION WITH STUDENTS FROM MARYLAND MONTGOMERY AND PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTIES AND WASHINGTON DC WARDS 7 8 5. MOREOVER THE PROGRAM GAINED AN INCREASE IN INTERNATIONAL AND NATIONAL STAFF INCREASING ITS EDUCATIONAL OFFERINGS FOR THE COMMUNITIES WE SERVE. THE STAFF HAILING FROM PHILADELPHIA AND THE PHILIPPINES PROVIDED COUNTLESS HOURS OF INSTRUCTION TO STUDENTS RANGING FROM SEVEN TO 17 YEARS OLD. PROFESSIONAL INSTRUCTION INCLUDED MODERN HORTON GRAHAM CLASSES CLASSICAL BALLET CAREER GUIDANCE MENTORSHIP DC DANCE HISTORY AND DANCE MEDICINE.
SINCE 2020 NGOMA CENTER FOR DANCE'S NEWEST PROGRAM NGOMA FILM WORKS HAS BEEN BUZZING WITH NEW ITS LATEST PRODUCTIONS. IN PARTNERSHIPS WITH DOG BARK MEDIA LLC A BLACK-OWNED MEDIA COMPANY IN WASHINGTON DC NGOMA FILM WORKS INITIAL PROJECTS HAVE RECEIVED SELECTION IN MORE THAN 10 FILM FESTIVALS - INCLUDING AMERICAN DANCE FESTIVAL'S MOVIES BY MOVERS. FY2023 - FURTHERMORE NGOMA FILM WORKS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH DOG BARK MEDIA RELEASED THE ANTICIPATED FEATURE DOCUMENTARY COMPANY D. A SMALL-BUT-MIGHTY WASHINGTON DC DANCE COMPANY BECOMES THE PLACE FOR DANCERS TO FULFILL THEIR DANCE CAREERS UNDER THE CONTEMPORARY BALLET VISION OF BLACK CHOREOGRAPHY VISIONARY SHAWN SHORT.
