COUNCIL ON AMERICAN - ISLAMIC, CURRENTLY SERVES AS FISCAL SPONSOR TO THE AWOOD CENTER. THE AWOOD (I.E. THE SOMALI WORD FOR POWER) CENTER IS A DYNAMIC WORKER-LED ORGANIZATION THAT CREATES A CULTURALLY AND LINGUISTICALLY RELEVANT SPACE TO BUILD UNITY AND DEVELOP THE NEXT GENERATION OF LEADERS IN MINNESOTAS DIVERSE EAST AFRICAN COMMUNITIES. THE AWOOD CENTER IS ENGAGING THE COMMUNITY OF 100,000 AND GROWING RECENT IMMIGRANTS AND THEIR FAMILIES IN THE TWIN-CITIES AREA BY EDUCATING, ORGANIZING, DEVELOPING LEADERSHIP AND MOBILIZING TO IMPROVE THE ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL LIFE OF THE COMMUNITY AND ALL WORKING PEOPLE.


ISLAMOPHOBIA CONFERENCE: ONE OF OUR CORE PROGRAMS IS A CONFERENCE THAT BRINGS COMMUNITY TOGETHER WITH THE GOAL TO RAISE AWARENESS ABOUT EVIL OF ISLAMOPHOBIA AND DISCUSS THE ACTIONS TO TACKLE THE ISSUE. ANOTHER GOAL IS TO CREATE A STRONG COMMUNITY AT THE LOCAL LEVEL BY FORMING A COLLABORATIVE SPACE FOR ALL. WELL KNOWN ACTIVISTS AND SCHOLARS ARE INVITED FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY. LOCAL LEADERS AND ALLIES ATTEND.


ANNUAL RAMADAN DINNER:WE HAVE AN ANNUAL DINNER DURING THE MONTH OF RAMADAN THAT WE HOST TO HIGHLIGHT OUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS FROM THE PRIOR YEAR AND SHARE THE GOALS FOR THE CURRENT YEAR. DINNER IS OPEN TO COMMUNITY MEMBERS. THE EVENT IS ONE OF THE KEY EVENTS THAT BRINGS ABOUT 400-450 GUESTS IN AUDIENCE.
