BLACK RIVER INDUSTRIES (BRI) PROVIDES VOCATIONAL AND RESIDENTIAL TRAINING AND SUPPORT SERVICES, SUPPORTED EMPLOYMENT, AS WELL AS DAY SERVICES/COMMUNITY INTEGRATION PROGRAM, TO PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES, THE ELDERLY, AND THOSE WITH CHRONIC MENTAL ILLNESS. BRI PROVIDES THE LARGEST COUNTYWIDE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM IN TAYLOR COUNTY TO INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES AND SENIOR CITIZENS.

BLACK RIVER INDUSTRIES SERVED 133 PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES IN 2021 UNDER SEVEN PROGRAM AREAS; VOCATIONAL SERVICES, DAY SERVICES/COMMUNITY INTEGRATION, INDEPENDENT LIVING, RESIDENTIAL, SUPPORTED EMPLOYMENT, SUPERVISED VISITS, PARENT EDUCATION, AND TRANSPORTATION. WE EMPLOY AN AVERAGE OF 80 STAFF MEMBERS TO ASSIST IN PROVIDING OPPORTUNITIES. OUR SERVICES ARE MAINLY PROVIDED TO TAYLOR AND PRICE COUNTY RESIDENTS, HOWEVER SEVERAL INDIVIDUALS FROM SURROUNDING COUNTIES ALSO PARTAKE IN OUR SERVICES. 58 OF THESE INDIVIDUALS USED OUR TRANSPORTATION SERVICES TO ACCESS WORK AND PERSONAL NEEDS SERVICES. 20 PEOPLE RECEIVED SUPPORTED EMPLOYMENT SERVICES IN THE FORM OF JOB PLACEMENT, COACHING AND/OR ONGOING SUPPORT. THE DAY SERVICES/COMMUNITY INTEGRATION PROGRAM PROVIDED CAREGIVING AND MEANINGFUL COMMUNITY PROGRAMMING TO 21 INDIVIDUALS. 64 INDIVIDUALS RECEIVED IN HOME SERVICES TO PROMOTE INDEPENDENCE AND SAFE LIVING SKILLS. WE STARTED TWO NEW PROGRAMS THIS YEAR BY PROVIDING SERVICES FOR SUPERVISED VISITS AND PARENT EDUCATION. WE SERVED 12 INDIVIDUALS FOR SUPERVISED VISITS AND 3 PARENTS RECEIVED PARENT EDUCATION CLASSES. SERVICES/COMMUNITY INTEGRATION PROGRAM PROVIDED CAREGIVING AND MEANINGFUL COMMUNITY PROGRAMMING TO 21 INDIVIDUALS. 64 INDIVIDUALS RECEIVED IN HOME SERVICES TO PROMOTE INDEPENDENCE AND SAFE LIVING SKILLS. WE STARTED TWO NEW PROGRAMS THIS YEAR BY PROVIDING SERVICES FOR SUPERVISED VISITS AND PARENT EDUCATION. WE SERVED 12 INDIVIDUALS FOR SUPERVISED VISITS AND 3 PARENTS RECEIVED PARENT EDUCATION CLASSES.
IN 2021, BRI'S PRODUCTION DEPARTMENT PROVIDED DIVERSE EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES TO 33 PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES. VOCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES RANGED FROM: LIGHT ASSEMBLY, GENERAL PACKAGING, FOOD PACKAGING, COLLATING AND CONFIDENTIAL DOCUMENT SHREDDING (102,748 POUNDS). COMMERCIAL SEWING WAS OFFERED TO PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES AS WELL AS OTHERS IN THE COMMUNITY. BRI PROVIDES CUSTODIAL AND LAWN CARE SERVICES FOR TWO NATIONAL GUARD ARMORIES FOR THE DEPT. OF MILITARY AFFAIRS AND FOUR WAYSIDES FOR THE WISCONSIN DEPT. OF TRANSPORTATION (DOT). BRI ALSO OPERATED A COMMERCIAL LAWN CARE SERVICE FOR PRIVATE RESIDENCE AND LOCAL BUSINESSES. BRI'S EXTERNAL WORK CONTRACTS EMPLOYED 6 PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES.
BRI HAS OFFERED TRANSPORTATION SERVICES TO DISABLED ADULTS SINCE 1973; TO SENIORS, IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE TAYLOR COUNTY COMMISSION ON AGING'S ELDERLY TRANSPORTATION PROGRAM, SINCE 1980; AND CHILDREN SINCE 1990. THIS REPRESENTS THE LARGEST PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM IN OUR COUNTY. IN 2021, OUR FLEET EXTENDED SERVICES TO APPROXIMATELY 130 UNDUPLICATED PASSENGERS AND LOGGED OVER 271,000 MILES. OUR FLEET IS FULLY ACCESSIBLE, AND CONSISTS OF TWELVE BUSES WITH WHEELCHAIR LIFTS. ALL OF OUR BUSES ARE PURCHASED WITH GRANT MONIES THAT ARE AWARDED TO US FROM THE WISCONSIN DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION'S (WIS-DOT) COMPETITIVE SECTION 5310 GRANT PROGRAM AND CORRESPONDING MATCH MONEY FROM DONORS. OUR BUSES ARE DESIGNED TO HANDLE OVERSIZED WHEELCHAIRS AND MOBILITY DEVICES. WE CONTINUE TO HAVE INCREASED DEMAND FROM NURSING HOMES AND HOMEBOUND INDIVIDUALS UTILIZING THESE DEVICES FOR TRANSPORTATION FOR SHOPPING AND SOCIAL EVENTS, AS WELL AS TO MEDICAL APPOINTMENTS, THAT THEY WOULD NOT OTHERWISE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO ACCESS. IN ADDITION TO OUR BUS SERVICES, WE UTILIZE 11 PROGRAM CARS, 3 TRUCKS, AND TWO CATERING VANS FOR OUR WORK AND FOOD SERVICE PROGRAMS.
BRI'S FOOD SERVICES INDUSTRIES COMPONENT HAS BEEN PROVIDING MEALS FOR SENIORS AND CHILDREN SINCE 1981. FOOD SERVICES PROVIDES COMMERCIAL KITCHEN EXPERIENCE FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES IN PREPARATION FOR COMMUNITY EMPLOYMENT. THE MAJORITY OF MEALS WERE PROVIDED UNDER CONTRACT WITH THE TAYLOR COUNTY COMMISSION ON AGING AT TWO SENIOR CENTERS IN THE COUNTY, AS WELL AS THE MEALS-ON-WHEELS PROGRAM. IN ADDITION, OUR PASSENGER ROUTES FOR THE ELDERLY AND PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES ROUTINELY DELIVER MEALS TO MANY HOMEBOUND SENIORS IN OUTLYING AREAS WHO WOULD NOT OTHERWISE BE ABLE TO ACCESS THE CONGREGATE MEAL SITES.
