SCHOLARSHIPS EVERY SPRING, MEMBERS OF THE SOCIETY OF WOMEN ENGINEERS COMMUNITY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN ARE INVITED TO APPLY FOR A SCHOLARSHIP THROUGH THE SECTION. THIS YEAR, 26 INDIVIDUALS RECEIVED SCHOLARSHIPS. THE SCHOLARSHIP CATEGORIES INCLUDED OUTSTANDING ENGINEERS PERFORMANCE, EXCELLENCE IN SERVICE, ASPIRE, ADVANCE, AND ACHIEVE, OUTSTANDING UNDERCLASSMAN, OUTSTANDING UPPERCLASSMAN, AND RISING LEADERS. THE APPLICANTS WERE JUDGED BY AN EXTERNAL PANEL OF JUDGES WITHIN THE UNIVERSITY SYSTEM.
OUTREACH OUR ORGANIZATION SEEKS TO EDUCATE YOUNG WOMEN, FROM GIRL SCOUTS TO COLLEGE STUDENTS, ABOUT ENGINEERING. THESE ACTIVITIES DID INCLUDE WORKSHOPS WITH LOCAL SCHOOLS (MIDDLE AND HIGH); EVENTS CATERED TOWARD FOUR DISTINCT GROUPS: ELEMENTARY-AGED CHILDREN, GIRL SCOUTS, MIDDLE SCHOOLERS, AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS; AND A WEEK-LONG ENGINEERING SUMMER CAMP FOR HIGH STUDENTS. ALL EVENTS FOCUSED ON ENGINEERING EDUCATION AND OUTREACH THROUGH DESIGN-BASED ACTIVITIES. THESE EXPENSES REFLECT OUTREACH EXPENSES DURING THE YEAR $10,459.73 (SEE SCHEDULE O) AND SEE CAMP EXPENSES $13572.13 (SEE SCHEDULE O).
NATIONAL CONFERENCE THIS YEAR THE SOCIETY OF WOMEN ENGINEERS NATIONAL CONFERENCE WAS HELD IN PERSON. THE SECTION PAID FOR REGISTRATION EXPENSES, MEALS, HOTELS, AND TRANSPORTATION FOR ANY MEMBER WHO WANTED TO ATTEND. THE CONFERENCE SERVED AS A PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITY WITH EVENTS MEANT TO HELP STUDENTS PREPARE FOR A CAREER IN ENGINEERING.
OTHER PROGRAMS INCLUDE PUBLIC RELATIONS, CORPORATE INDUSTRY SESSIONS, WOMEN IN LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE, GRADUATE STUDENT EVENTS, AND COMPETITIVE DESIGN TEAM.
