MISSION OF GOLDSMITH-TERRY POST NO. 3523, VETERANS OF FOREIGN WARS CONSISTS OF VETERANS ADVOCACY, HISTORICAL EDUCATION AND COMMEMORATION, ENCOURAGING NATIONAL SECURITY THROUGH SUPPORT OF OUR NATION'S MEN AND WOMEN IN UNIFORM, PROMOTING GOOD CITIZENSHIP AND COMMUNITY SERVICE, ENCOURAGING AMERICA'S YOUTH TO EXCEL IN ATHLETICS, COMMUNITY SERVICE AND ACADEMICS, FACILITATING DIRECT ASSISTANCE TO NEEDY MILITARY PERSONNEL AND THEIR FAMILIES AND TO VETERANS AND SUPPORTING ACTIONS AND ACTIVITIES THAT FURTHER THESE MISSIONS AND PROMOTE THE SOCIAL WELL BEING OF VETERANS AND THEIR FAMILIES.

THE POST FURNISHES GAS AND FOOD FOR A VETERAN-IN-DISTRESS AND THEIR FAMILY APPROXIMATELY FIVE TIMES PER YEAR. FREE FOOD IS OFFERED ON VETERAN'S DAY, EASTER, THANKSGIVING AND CHRISTMAS TO NEEDY VETERANS AND THEIR FAMILIES. ADDITIONALLY, THREE POST MEMBERS WORK WITH MATTHEW 25 FOOD DISTRIBUTION ONCE A WEEK FOR NEEDY FAMILIES.
ELEVEN MEMBERS PARTICIPATE ON COLOR GUARD FOR FUNERALS FOR VETERANS, MEMBERS AND NON-MEMBERS AS WELL AS FOR CITY EVENTS. CONDUCT MEMORIAL DAY SERVICES FOR 175-200 CITY RESIDENTS. TEN MEMBERS, 3 HRS EACH, PUT FLAGS ON VETERAN'S GRAVES FOR MEMORIAL DAY. SIX MEMBERS, 2 HRS EACH, PUT UP STREET FLAGS FOR THE COMMUNITY ON HOLIDAYS.
THE POST BUILDING HALL IS USED FOR FUNERAL MEALS AND BLOOD DRIVES. THE ORGANIZATION HOLDS HUNTER AND SAFETY CLASSES FOR THE GENERAL PUBLIC AND YOUTH. ADDITIONALLY, THE ORGANIZATION SPONSORS A "PATRIOTIC PEN" ESSAY CONTEST FOR JUNIOR HIGH STUDENTS AND A "VOICE OF DEMOCRACY" CONTEST FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. CUB SCOUTS HOLD MEETINGS AND SPECIAL ACTIVITIES USING POST BUILDING HALL. BOND, CLINTON, MARION, WASHINGTON COUNTIES USE HALL FOR CHRISTMAS GIFT GIVE AWAY PROGRAM AND THE HEAD-START SCHOOL REGISTRATION.
