THE FRIENDS OF SAN DIEGO WILDLIFE REFUGES IS A NON-PROFIT CITIZENS ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO SUPPORTING CONSERVATION AND PROMOTING AWARENESS AND APPRECIATION OF THE NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGES OF SAN DIEGO COUNTY.

THE FRIENDS OF SAN DIEGO REFUGES INITIATED THE 5TH & IRIS PROJECT IN 2021 IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE US DEPARTMENT OF FISH & WILDLIFE AND THE CALIFORNIA PARKS DEPARTMENT TO ENHANCE VISITOR ENGAGEMENT, EDUCATION, AND ENRICHMENT AT THE TIJUANA ESTUARY. THIS PROGRAMS INITIAL FOCUS IN ON THE TRAIL INTERSECTION AT 5TH AND IRIS AND THE VISITOR CENTER. THE OVERALL TIMEFRAME FOR THIS PROGRAM IS 3 TO 5 YEARS.


THE ORGANIZATION HELPS ADMINISTER AND ACTS AS A TRANSFER AGENT FOR U.S. FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE PROGRAMS AND CALIFORNIA STATE PARKS PROGRAMS FOR THE NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGES OF SAN DIEGO COUNTY.ALSO, THE ORGANIZATION ASSISTS IN IMPLEMENTION OF YOUTH OUTREACH AND EDUCATION PROGRAMS CONDUCTED BY U.S. FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE. IN ADDITION, THE ORGANIZATION ASSISTS IN THE OPERATION OF A CALIFORNIA STATE PARK BOOKSTORE AT THE TIJUANA RIVER NATIONAL ESTUARY.
