WEED CONTROL AND EDUCATION TOURS ON LOCAL RANCHES TO USE WILDLIFE AS ASSETS; HELPING RANCHERS DEAL WITH WILDLIFE ISSUES; AND NEW BRUCELLOCISS SURVEILLANCE AREA REGULATIONS; WORKING TO SETUP COMPOST SITE AND CARCASS.

CARCASS COMPOST SITE - THE SITE IS MANAGED BY THE BAR MZ RANCH AND THE MVRG PROJECT DIRECTOR. THERE ARE SUBSTANTIAL COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH PLACING CARCASSES IN THE BUNKERS, MONITORING THE CARCASS DECOMPOSITION PROCESS AND KEEPING THE ELECTRIC FENCED ENCLOSURE MAINTAINED, TURNING THE PILES, AND MATERIALS FOR MIXING TO MAKE THE COMPOST. DEQ TRAINING SESSION FOR PROPER MANAGEMENT ARE CURRENTLY ON-LINE AND HELP WITH MAINTAIN THE SITE ACCREDITATION.
WEED BIO CONTROL- THE MADISON COUNTY BIOCONTROL PROJECT CONTINUES TO BE ONE OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL IN THE STATE. IN 2022, THE CREW COLLECTED AND RELEASED OVER 85,000 SPECIALIZED INSECTS, SURVEYED AND MAPPED DOZENS OF PROPERTIES AND SPOKE WITH MANY LANDOWNERS. THE PROJECT ALSO IS AN IMPORTANT PARTNER IN THE STATEWIDE STUDY OF A NEW BIOCONTROL FOR CANADA THISTLE. IN 2022, WE REVISITED AND MONITORED 17 SITES, RE-INOCULATED 13, AND SPENT 3 DAYS IN THE FIELD HARVESTING INFECTED PLANT MATERIALS IN THE FALL. THIS WORK WAS DONE IN BEAVERHEAD, GALLATIN, AND MADISON COUNTIES.
CO-OPERATIVE WEED CONTROL PROJECTS- WE PARTNERED WITH THE MADISON COUNTY WEED BOARD ON A SPECIAL PROJECT IN MEADOW CREEK WATERSHED NEAR MCALLISTER. THE WEED COMMITTEE HELPED FACILITATE THIS PROJECT BY PERFORMING EXTENSIVE OUTREACH TO LANDOWNERS, COMMUNICATING WITH COMMERCIAL APPLICATORS, SURVEYING AND MAPPING. OUR CREW ALSO PARTICIPATED IN THE ANNUAL BEAR TRAP SPRAY DAY, A LARGE COOPERATIVE EFFORT THAT BRINGS TOGETHER PUBLIC LAND MANAGERS AND THE PUBLIC.
