IN 2021,75 UNDERSERVED NYC ELEMENTARY SCHOOL YOUTH, WHO READ BELOW GRADE LEVEL PARTICIAPATED IN "ZOOM READING ALOUD TO DOGS", TO HELP BUILD LITERACY SKILLS. IN-PERSON PROGRAMS IN WHICH CHILDREN READ ALOUD TO DOGS HAVE PROVEN TO INCREASE A CHILD'S READING CONFIDENCE BECAUSE DOGS DON'T JUDGE, INTERRUPT OR CORRECT. THROUGH OUR COLLABORATION WITH THE MARLENE MEYERSON JCC MANHATTAN'S TUTORING PROGRAM, STUDENTS READ TO A DOG ON ZOOM AFTER THEIR TUTORING SESSION. THIS INNOVATIVE REMOTE READING PROGRAM WAS CREATED IN JUNE 2020 IN RESPONSE TO THE PANDEMIC AND OUR INABILITY TO CONDUCT OUR IN-SCHOOL SEL PROGRAMMING IN MIDDLE SCHOOLS.
