TO ADVANCE THE NATURAL HISTORY, CONSERVATION AND ECOSYSTEM KNOWLEDGE OF THE TAHOE REGION THROUGH SCIENCE, EDUCATION AND OUTREACH.

EDUCATION:IN 2021, WE HAD A TOTAL OF 4588 STUDENT CONTACTS FROM OVER 15 DIFFERENT SCHOOLS. WE CONTINUED TO OFFER VIRTUAL PROGRAMS, AND IN THE FALL WERE ABLE TO RETURN TO IN-SCHOOL PROGRAMS IN SOME SCHOOLS/DISTRICTS, COVERING TOPICS FROM INSECTS, BATS, BIRDS, FROGS, MAMMALS, AND GEOLOGY. WE PRESENTED 43 FIELD TRIP PROGRAMS, 47 VIRTUAL PROGRAMS, AND 71 IN-SCHOOL PROGRAMS, AND GAVE 25 NATURE DAY CAMPS, 21 CAMPS/OUTINGS FOR OTHER ORGANIZATIONS (E.G. COURAGE PROJECT, BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB OF SOUTH LAKE TAHOE), AND 23 NATURE CLUB PROGRAMS. WE CREATED AND PUBLISHED 8 TAHOME NATURE LESSONS. WE ALSO REACHED 220 STUDENTS VIA CLUB EVENTS, AND HOSTED 299 CHILDREN OVER THE 21 NATURE CAMPS.
RESEARCH: TINS CONTINUED WITH OUR USUAL SUITE OF CITIZEN SCIENCE COORDINATION, INCLUDING THE LAKE TAHOE MID-WINTER BALD EAGLE SURVEY, SOUTH LAKE TAHOE CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNT, MID-WINTER RAPTOR SURVEYS IN BOTH SIERRA AND CARSON VALLEYS, NORTH AMERICAN BUTTERFLY ASSOCIATION BUTTERFLY COUNTS, U.S. NIGHTJAR SURVEYS, AND THE ANNUAL ODONATES MINI-BLITZ. WE CONTINUED TO PARTICIPATE IN JOINT MONITORING EFFORTS OF PEREGRINE FALCON NESTING SITES AROUND THE TAHOE/TRUCKEE REGION. WE HAD 228 VOLUNTEERS PARTICIPATE IN CITIZEN SCIENCE PROGRAMS. WE CONTINUED RESEARCH INVESTIGATING ECOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF CONIFER THINNING ON BIRD COMMUNITIES IN TAHOE AREA ASPEN STANDS, AND PUBLISHED SEVERAL RESEARCH NOTES IN PEER-REVIEWED PUBLICATIONS.
OUTREACH: OUTREACH REMAINED DIFFICULT TO TRACK IN 2021 DUE TO COVID, LIMITED IN-PERSON EVENTS, AND MUCH OF OUR OUTREACH BEING VIRTUAL. MOST OF OUR PROGRAMS HAVE BEEN POSTED ONLINE AND CONTINUE TO RECEIVE VIEWS. WE DID HOST A TAHOE (BIRDING) BIG YEAR WITH CONSIDERABLE ENGAGEMENT THROUGH THE ENTIRE CALENDAR YEAR. WE HOSTED 39 OUTINGS WITH 362 PARTICIPANTS, AND HOSTED 22 TALKS, WITH AT LEAST 546 PARTICIPANTS (AS OF THE END OF THE YEAR).
