INNOVATIVE WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT: THE FOUNDATION IS ADVANCING GROUNDBREAKING RESEARCH TO ADDRESS WILD ANIMAL OVERPOPULATION THROUGH THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN INNOVATIVE IMMUNOCONTRACEPTIVE VACCINE. NOTABLE MILESTONES IN 2023 INCLUDE: PROOF-OF-CONCEPT VACCINE DEVELOPMENT - THE FOUNDATION SUCCESSFULLY CREATED AND TESTED THE FIRST-OF-PROOF CONCEPT IMMUNOCONTRACEPTIVE VACCINE FOR A WILD BOAR.UTILIZING A LIVE-ATTENUATED SWINE POX VIRUS AS THE VACCINE VECTOR, RESEARCHERS INFECTED PORCINE KIDNEY CELL LINES AND SUCCESSFULLY TRANSFERRED THE GENE FOR GREEN FLUORESCENT (GFP) TO LIVE PIG CELLS. FUTURE VACCINE ENHANCEMENTS- PLANS ARE IN PLACE TO REPLACE GFP WITH GNRH OR OTHER REPRODUCTIVE HORMONES, AIMING TO CREATE A SINGLE-DOSE, NON-SURGICAL STERILIZATION METHOD THAT COULD STERLIIZE TENS OF THOUSANDS OF WILD BOARS. SPAY & NEUTER PROGRAMS - RECOGNIZING THE VITAL ROLE OF SPAY AND NEUTER SERVICES IN CONTROLLING PET POPULATIONS, THE TARSHIS FOUNDATION PROVIDED SUBSTANTIAL FUNDING TO SUPPORT AFFORDABLE SPAY & NEUTER PROGRAMS IN UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES. DIRECT SUPPORT FOR FOR FACILITIES: THE FOUNDATION HELPED ESTABLISH LOW-COST SPAY AND NEUTER IN BAKERSFIELD, CA, RESULTING IN THE SUCCESSFUL SPAYING/NEUTERING OF OVER 4,000 COMPANION ANIMALS. SHELTER TRANSPORT PARTNERSHIPS: FINANCIAL BACKING WAS EXTENDED TO SHELTER TRANSPORT ORGANIZATIONS, FACILITATING THE RELOCATION OF 2,000 HOMELESS ANIMALS FROM HIGH-KILL SHELTERS TO RESCUE AND FOSTER ORGANIZATIONS, SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVING THEIR CHANCES OF ADOPTION. THROUGH THESE INITIATIVES, THE FOUNDATION AIMS TO ENHANCE ACCESS TO ESSENTIAL VETERINARY CARE AND PROMOTE RESPONSIBLE PET OWNERSHIP.
