ABINGDON WOODS PROJECT:RIVERKEEPER CONTINUED ITS LITIGATION ON THE WAREHOUSE IN THE WETLANDS "ABINGDON WOODS PROJECTX AND RECEIVED A PRECEDENT SETTING FAVORABLE DECISION FROM THE HARFORD COUNTY CIRCUIT COURT THAT REMANDED THE PERMIT BACK TO MDE TO PROVIDE AN OPPORTUNITY TO COMMENT ON THE ANTI-DEGRADATION AND SOCIOECONOMIC JUSTIFICATION. THE SITE CURRENTLY CONTAINS MANY SENSITIVE ENVIRONMENTAL FEATURES INCLUDING SIGNIFICANT FORESTED WETLAND, SPECIMEN TREES AND PART OF A STREAM CATCHMENT DRAINING TO OTTER POINT CREEK, A HIGH QUALITY TIER II WATERWAY, THAT DRAINS IN THE VIBRANT BUSH RIVER LARGEMOUTH BASS FISHERY. THIS FORESTED AREA PROVIDES VITAL STORMWATER & FLOOD CONTROLS TO ADJACENT AND DOWNSTREAM RESIDENTIAL AREAS. THE WORK IS ONGOING. 40% OF TOTAL PROJECTS.
C.P. CRANE COAL FIRED POWERPLANT: THIS SIGNIFICANT DISCHARGER OF PCB'S IN THE GUNPOWDER WATERSHED WAS CLOSED BY MDE ENFORCEMENT ACTION THUS CEASING COAL BURNING & DISCHARGES.RIVERKEEPER TRACKED REDEVELOPMENT PLANS OF THE PROPERTY. RIVERKEEPER OPPOSED A PLAN TO REDEVELOP THE PROPERTY INTO HOUSING THAT WOULD IMPACT THE TIDAL GUNPOWDER & MIDDLE RIVER AND REQUIRE COUNTY WATER AND SEWER TO BE BROUGHT OUT TO THE PENINSULA THAT IS APPROXIMATELY ONE FOOT ABOVE SEA LEVEL. 10% OF TOTAL PROJECTS
INDUSTRIAL DISCHARGES: IN THE LOWER GUNPOWDER RIVER & BUSH RIVER, THESE ARE IMPACTING WATER QUALITY. GUNPOWDER RIVERKEEPER UNDERTOOK A COMPLIANCE SWEEP OF THE UPSTREAM FACILITIES REGULATED BY NATIONAL POLLUTION ELIMINATION DISCHARGE (NPDES). "INDUSTRIAL DISCHARGE PERMITS" IDENTIFY THE PERMIT CONDITIONS AND ASSESS COMPLIANCE OF THES CONDITIONS AND THEIR IMPACTS TO LOCAL AND DOWNSTREAM WATER QUALITY TO SATISFY RIVERKEEPER'S GOAL OF PROVIDING SUPPORT TO MDE TO TAKE APPROPRIATE ENFORCEMENT ACTION SO THE ENVIRONMENTAL HARM FROM EXCEEDANCES OF REGULATED DISCHARGES IS PROPERLY ACCOUNTED FOR AND MITIGATED WITH FINES AND PENALTIES.
