THE CALUMET ART CENTER PROVIDES A VARIETY OF ART EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES FOR CHILDREN AND ADULTS IN THE COMMUNITY. IT ALSO HOSTS A PERMANENT EXHIBITION SPACE, A PERFORMANCE SPACE AND WORK SPACE FOR LOCAL ARTISTS. ON-SITE EQUIPMENT AVAILABLE FOR USE BY ARTISTS INCLUDES (3) TWO AND FOUR-HARNESS LOOMS, (2) KILNS, (1) CLAY SLAB ROLLER (2) POTTERY WHEELS, AND TORCHES FOR GLASS BEADS. THE PERFORMANCE SPACE HOSTS A GRAND PIANO WHICH WAS DONATED TO THE CENTER AND THE BUILDING'S ORIGINAL PIPE ORGAN BUILT IN 1907 AND HAS SINCE BEEN REMODELED TO INCLUDE ADDITIONAL CLASSROOM SPACE AND ARTIST STUDIO SPACE. THE PERFORMANCE SPACE IS UTILIZED BY THE GIFT OF MUSIC FOUNDATION WHICH OFFERS MUSIC LESSONS TO YOUTH AFTER SCHOOL AT NO COST. COMMUNITY MEMBERS TOOK ADVANTAGE OF BENCHES AND A PICNIC TABLE IN THE HERITAGE ROSE GARDEN WHICH HAS BEEN REMOVED TO MAKE ROOM FOR A PROPOSED ADDITION TO HOUSE MORE CREATIVE SPACES. THE PLANTS WERE DONATED TO VARIOUS COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS. THE DOWNSTAIRS GALLERY HAD A FULL AND COMPLETE OVERHAUL, MAKING IT A MUCH MORE ATTRACTIVE AND WELCOMING SPACE. SEVERAL MORE CONSIGNEES HAVE BEEN ADDED TO THE GALLERY. CLASSES RETURNED TO THE CENTER THIS PAST YEAR FOLLOWING COVID. THESE CLASSES/SESSIONS INCLUDED A STRONG HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL BACKGROUND OF THE ART FORMS. CLASSES INCLUDED WATERCOLOR PAINTING, STAINED GLASS, NEEDLE FELTING, JEWELRY MAKING, BASKET MAKING, HANDMADE BROOMS, ACRYLIC PAINTING AND MORE. THE CENTER HOSTED MANY EVENTS THAT WERE OPEN TO THE COMMUNITY INCLUDING REGIONAL ARTIST EXHIBITS, AN ART AUCTION AND AN ART SUPPLY SALE, JUST TO NAME A FEW. THE CENTER SERVED OVER 5,400 ARTISTS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS WITH THE ABOVE PROGRAMS AND OFFERINGS.
