THE ANIMAL WELFARE SOCIETY OF MONROE (AWSOM) PROVIDES SHELTER AND MEDICAL CARE FOR COMPANION ANIMALS SO THEY ARE FREE FROM ABUSE, HUNGER, FEAR, AND LONLINESS, UNTIL PLACING THEM IN RESPONSIBLE, FOREVER HOMES.

AWSOM ANIMAL SHELTER PROVIDES TOP-QUALITY, 24/7 CARE TO STRAY AND SURRENDERED DOGS AND CATS WITH A GOAL OF ENSURING ADOPTABILITY IN A SUITABLE HOME. IN 2022, THE SHELTER GAVE REFUGE TO 470 SURRENDERED AND 752 STRAY ANIMALS, AN INCREASE OF 20% OVER 2021. IN 2022, 1,238 ANIMALS WERE SUCCESSFULLY REHOMED, UP 21% OVER 2021.SHELTER FACILITIES INCLUDE STATE-OF-THE-ART GLASS DOG RUNS, A FREE ROAMING CAT ROOM, AN OUTDOOR EXERCISE AREA FOR DOGS, AND AN ADOPTER VISITATION SPACE. THESE PROVIDE CARE AND ATTENTION TO THE PHYSIOLOGICAL AND SOCIAL ADAPTABILITY OF OUR ANIMALS. ADOPTION, SURRENDER AND RETURN-TO-OWNER FEES ARE CHARGED TO SUPPLEMENT FUNDRAISING EVENTS AND DONATIONS FROM OUR GENEROUS COMMUNITY AT LARGE. SHELTER OPERATIONS ARE ALSO COMPRISED OF COMMUNITY OUTREACH TO YOUTH AND SPECIAL NEEDS GROUPS THAT VISIT THE FACILITY AND WHO RECEIVE EDUCATION ON THE IMPORTANCE OF HUMANE PET CARE. BOARD MEMBERS AND OTHERS SERVE AS AWSOM ANIMAL AMBASSADORS, REACHING OUT TO SCHOOLS, CHURCHES, AND CIVIC GROUPS WHILE PROVIDING EDUCAITON CONCERNING THE BENEFITS OF SPAY-NEUTER AND HUMANE ANIMAL CARE.


AWSOM OPERATES A SPAY-NEUTER AND WELLNESS CLINIC ADJACENT TO THE SHELTER WITH X-RAY, ULTRASOUND, AND A FULL SURGICAL SUITE. THE CLINIC PROVIDES THE NECESSARY MEDICAL CARE FOR SICK, NEGLECTED, OR ABUSED SHELTER ANIMALS UPON INTAKE, AND UP UNITL THEIR RECOVERY, IN ORDER TO MAKE THEM AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION. ADDITIONALLY, IT PERFORMS SURGERY AND PREVENTATIVE CARE TO EVERY AWSOM SHELTER ANIMAL AND, AS FREQUENTLY AS SCHEDULING PERMITS, PROVIDES LOW-COST VETERINARY CARE TO PETS OWNED BY MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC AS WELL AS TO HOMELESS FERAL CATS IN MONROE COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA. DURING 2022, THE CLINIC HAD 4,658 APPOINTMENTS, AN INCREASE OF 5.5% OVER 2021, AND PROVIDED 1,794 SPAY AND NEUTER SURGERIES, AN INCREASE OF 11%. EVERY ANIMAL ADOPTED AT AWSOM IS SPAYED OR NEUTERED TO REDUCE PET OVERPOPULATION.
