FOOD ACCESS (PRODUCE RX): DC GREENS BELIEVES ACCESS TO HEALTHY FOOD IS A BASIC HUMAN RIGHT. OUR PRODUCE RX PROGRAM, WHICH ADVANCES A FOOD IS MEDICINE APPROACH, ALLOWS MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS TO PRESCRIBE FRESH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES TO PATIENTS WITH DIET-RELATED CHRONIC ILLNESSES. PATIENTS RECEIVE UP TO $120/MO. TO SPEND IN THE PRODUCE AISLE AND REDEEM THEIR PRESCRIPTIONS AT THEIR LOCAL GROCERY STORES. WE ALSO PREVIOUSLY PILOTED THE PRODUCE PLUS PROGRAM, WHICH PROVIDES VOUCHERS FOR 25K+ LOW-INCOME D.C. RESIDENTS ANNUALLY TO SHOP FOR FRESH, LOCAL PRODUCE AT CITY FARMERS' MARKETS. THIS PROGRAM CHANGED THE LANDSCAPE OF HEALTHY FOOD ACCESS IN THE CITY. AT THE END OF 2021, DC GREENS COMPLETED OUR PILOT AND PRODUCE PLUS BECAME A PERMANENT PART OF THE D.C. FOOD SYSTEM.
THE WELL AT OXON RUN: THE WELL AT OXON RUN IS DC GREENS' PLACE-BASED INIATIVE AND UP-STREAM INTERVENTION TO SUPPORT HEALTH EQUITY. IT SITS ON ONE ACRE OF LAND, 20,000 SQUARE FEET OF WHICH IS DEDICATED TO FRUIT AND VEGETABLE PRODUCTION FOR THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITY IN THE CONGRESS HEIGHTS NEIGHBORHOOD OF SOUTHEAST DC. WE SPENT THREE YEARS VISIONING THIS SPACE WITH COMMUNITY LEADERS, LONG-TIME NEIGHBORHOOD RESIDENTS, AND LOCAL NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS AND OPENED THE SPACE IN 2022. IN ADDITION TO SEASONAL CROP PRODUCTION, THE WELL ALSO OFFERS LARGE COMMUNITY CONVENING SPACES (INCLUDING AN OUTDOOR CLASSROOM) AND HOSTS ART, CULTURE, FITNESS, AND OTHER EVENTS THROUGHOUT THE SEASON. THIS IS A SPACE FOR ALL COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO WORK IN THE SOIL, CELEBRATE AND SHARE EXPERIENCES IN NATURE TOGETHER.
GENERAL PROGRAMS: GENERAL PROGRAM SUPPORT INCLUDES BUT IS NOT LIMITED TO: DC GREENS' PARTICIPATION IN COMMISSIONS AND COLLABORATIVES THAT ADVANCE OUR MISSION OF HEALTH EQUITY IN THE DISTRICT; COLLABORATION AND STRATEGY SESSIONS WITH OTHER NONPROFIT LEADERS THAT SPAN MULTIPLE PROGRAMS; GETTING GENERAL INFORMATION TO THE PUBLIC ABOUT OUR PROGRAMS AND MISSION AS A WHOLE; GENERAL PROGRAMMATIC SUPPORT THAT IS NOT SPECIFIC TO ANY ONE PROGRAM BUT BENEFITS ALL PROGRAMS.
