OUR MISSION IS TO RESTORE AND PROTECT THE LITTLE FALLS WATERSHED, A VULNERABLE NATURAL ECOSYSTEM NESTLED IN MONTGOMERY COUNTY AND WASHINGTON, D.C. WE STRIVE TO RESTORE AND SUSTAIN THE WATER QUALITY, NATURAL HABITAT, HEALTH, AND INTEGRITY OF THE WATERSHED. WE DEVELOP AND APPLY DIVERSE, INNOVATIVE, AND SUCCESSFUL PROGRAMS TO ACCOMPLISH THESE GOALS; BUILD AWARENESS ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF THESE NATURAL SPACES TO OUR ENVIRONMENTALLY SUSTAINABLE FUTURE; AND ENSURE THAT OUR CREEKS AND THEIR SURROUNDING NATURAL ENVIRONMENT SURVIVE AND THRIVE FOR THEIR OWN SAKE, AND THE ENJOYMENT AND UTILIZATION OF CURRENT AND FUTURE GENERATIONS.

STEWARDSHIP: WE RESTORE THE WATER QUALITY, NATURAL HABITAT AND ECOLOGY OF THE LITTLE FALLS WATERSHED THROUGH ACTIVITIES SUCH AS STREAM CLEANUPS AND REMOVAL OF INVASIVE PLANTS. SOME OF OUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN 2022 INCLUDED: FALMOUTH ROAD RESTORATION. IN THIS 6,000 SQUARE FOOT AREA, WE REMOVED THE NON-NATIVE PLANTS AND PLANTED THE AREA WITH OVER 2,000 NATIVE GRASSES, FLOWERS, TREES AND SHRUBS. TRASH REMOVAL. 250 VOLUNTEERS HELPED REMOVE 2,800 POUNDS OF TRASH AND 42 HUGE BAGS OF CANS AND BOTTLES FROM THE LOCAL CREEK AND ADJACENT PARKLAND. OVERLOOK. WE COMPLETED A MULTIYEAR STORMWATER CONTROL PROJECT FUNDED BY THE CHESAPEAKE BAY TRUST.


SCIENCE: WE MONITOR THE HEALTH OF THE LITTLE FALLS BRANCH THROUGH BACTERIAL MONITORING, SALT MONITORING AND MACROINVERTEBRATE MONITORING. ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN 2022 INCLUDED: - THROUGH OUR BACTERIAL MONTORING PROJECT, DISCOVERING A MAJOR SEWAGE LEAKAGE IN THE WILLETT BRANCH AND WORKING WITH THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT TO LOCAL AND REPAIR THE PROBLEM. 16 MONITORS SAMPLED FOR E. COLI AT 10 LOCATIONS DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS. - OUR BENTHIC BACTERIA TEAM SURVEYS THE LITTLE FALLS BRANCH QUARTERLY TO TRACK THE HEALTH OF THE CREEK.


EDUCATION AND OUTREACH: WE BUILD COMMUNITY AWARENESS AND APPRECIATION OF THE LITTLE FALLS WATERSHED THROUGH A NEWSLETTER, A WEBSITE, AND ACTIVITIES SUCH AS PUBLIC EVENTS AND HIKES. ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN 2022 INCLUDED: - NORWOOD PARK NATURAL HISTORY DAY ATTRACTED OVER 200 PARTICIPANTS TO LEARN FROM EXPERTS ABOUT THE GEOLOGY, FLORA AND FAUNA OF THIS POPULAR NEIGHBORHOOD PARK. - 80 PEOPLE JOINED US ON NEW YEAR'S DAY TO DISCOVER THE MOUTH OF THE LITTLE FALLS AND LEARN ABOUT THE NATIVE PLANTS ALONG THE LITTLE FALLS BRANCH
