TO FOSTER A VIBRANT, RESILIENT AND SUSTAINABLE LOCAL FOOD SYSTEM IN SAN JUAN COUNTY, WASHINGTON

BRICKWORKS: A HISTORICAL RENTAL VENUE PROVIDING HALL RENTALS AND A YEAR- ROUND HOME FOR THE SAN JUAN ISLAND FARMERS MARKET. DUE TO COVID, THE INDOOR HALL WAS CLOSED UNTIL JUNE OF 2021. THE COMMERCIAL KITCHEN FUNCTIONED AS BUSINESS INCUBATOR FOR FOUR BUSINESSES, INCLUDING THE RETAIL PICK-UP SITE OF THE SAN JUAN ISLANDS FOOD HUB. IN DECEMBER, THE OLD-FASHIONED CHRISTMAS MARKET HAD OVER 730 PEOPLE IN ATTENDANCE.
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT: THE AGRICULTURAL GUILD ASSISTED FARMERS TO EXPAND MARKETS BY PROVIDING ADMIN AND GRANT SUPPORT TO THE SAN JUAN ISLANDS FOOD HUB, A WEEKLY ONLINE RETAIL AND WHOLESALE SALES PLATFORM LOCAL PRODUCT FROM 28 PRODUCERS. AS PART OF THE SJC FOOD SYSTEM TEAM, WE COLLECTED DATA TO COMPLETE A SJC FOOD SYSTEM ASSESSMENT, INCLUDING: ECONOMIC IMPACT OF LOCAL FOOD ANALYSIS AND SJC LOCAL FOOD CONSUMER SURVEY OF 582 HOUSEHOLDS. AS A MEMBER OF THE LOPEZ FOOD CENTER TEAM, COMPLETED A FEASIBILITY STUDY AND FOCUS GROUPS TO DEVELOP A BUSINESS PLAN. IN PARTNERSHIP WITH SJC HEALTH, NINETEEN FARMS ON FOUR ISLANDS PARTICIPATED IN THE ISLAND GROWN DEBIT CARD PROGRAM WHERE OVER 50 LOW-INCOME HOUSEHOLDS SHOPPED AT FARM STANDS, FARMERS MARKETS, THE FOOD HUB AND FOOD CO-OPS. FOUR FARMS RECEIVED 8200 IN FARM FUND MICRO-LOANS.
THE AGRICULTURAL GUILD ASSISTED WASHINGTON STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION OF SJC TO ORGANIZE SAN JUAN ISLANDS AGRICULTURAL SUMMIT. WE HELPED COORDINATE A TWO-DAY VALUE-ADDED PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT TRAINING WITH 31 PARTICIPANTS. STIPENDS WERE PAID TO THREE FARMS WHO RECEIVED THEIR PRODUCE SAFETY ALLIANCE TRAINING. "ISLAND GROWN IN SAN JUANS" COOPERATIVE MARKETING PROGRAM AND WEBSITE INCLUDES A PARTNERSHIP WITH WA FOOD AND FARM FINDER INTERACTIVE MAP. ASSISTED SJI'S CONSERVATION DISTRICT AND SJ MAKERS GUILD WITH FARM TOURS IN SEPTEMBER AND OCTOBER WITH ~1500 PEOPLE ATTENDING OVER THREE WEEKENDS ON THREE ISLANDS. THE FARMERS-TO-FARMLAND PROGRAM CONNECTED 18 PARTICIPANTS TO RESOURCES AND LAND OPPORTUNITIES, AND WE ESTABLISHED A FOCUS GROUP TO RESEARCH MODELS FOR COLLABORATIVE FARMING/INCUBATOR.
