ON JANUARY 1, 2020, COMPREHENSIVE BAIL REFORM TOOK EFFECT IN NEW YORK STATE THAT ELIMINATED THE USE OF CASH BAIL FOR MOST CHARGES. AS A RESULT, BFF TEMPORARILY CEASED BAILING OUT NEW CLIENTS ON THAT DATE. HOWEVER, BFF CONTINUED TO OPERATE IN ORDER TO SUPPORT EXISTING CLIENTS AND SEEK REFUNDS AS EXISTING CASES CLOSED. BFF ALSO CONTINUED TO MONITOR ONGOING EVENTS AND COMPLIANCE BY KEY ACTORS WITH THE LETTER AND SPIRIT OF THE BAIL REFORM BILL. WITH THE ROLL BACK OF THE ORIGINAL LEGISLATION IN 2023, BFF'S BOARD OF DIRECTORS VOTED TO RESUME BAIL OUTS ON A LIMITED BASIS BUT CONTINUES TO ENVISION CEASING OPERATIONS ONCE MEANINGFUL BAIL REFORM IS ACHIEVED AND ALL OF ITS EXISTING CASES HAVE BEEN CLOSED.
