TO PROTECT AND RESTORE THE MYSTIC RIVER, ITS TRIBUTARIES AND WATERSHED LANDS FOR THE BENEFIT OF PRESENT AND FUTURE GENERATIONS AND TO CELEBRATE THE VALUE, IMPORTANCE AND GREAT BEAUTY OF THESE NATURAL RESOURCES. MYRWA IS PROTECTING WATER QUALITY, RESTORING IMPORTANT HABITAT, BUILDING CLIMATE RESILIENCE, TRANSFORMING PARKS AND PATHS, AND INSPIRING YOUTH AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS.

RESTORATION - CLEAN WATER IS KEY TO A HEALTY WATERSHED AND A DIVERSE AND ROBUST RIVER ECOLOGY; WHILE URBAN PARKLANDS PROVIDE AN OPPORTUNITY TO IMPROVE HEALTH OUTCOMES FOR PEOPLE AND EXPANDED HABITAT. THROUGH THIS PROGRAM AREA, THE MYSTIC RIVER WATERSHED ASSOCIATION RUNS A ROBUST WATER QUALITY PROGRAMS, GREENWAYS INITIATIVE, AND INVASIVE PLANT REMOVAL PROGRAM THAT ARE RESTORING THE HEALTH OF THE RIVER AND PARKLANDS.
ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION AND OUTREACH - THE MYSTIC RIVER WATERSHED ASSOCIATION WORKS TO ENGAGE PEOPLE IN THE LIFE OF THE RIVER AS IT IS IMPORTANT FOR THE HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENT AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS. EFFORTS FOCUS ON ENGAGING VOLUNTEERS IN SCIENCE, HOSTING EDUCATIONAL EVENTS, AND BRINGING THE HERRING MIGRATION INTO LOCAL SCHOOL DISTRICTS THROUGH AN UNDERWATER CAMERA, INNOVATIVE WEB PLATFORM, IN-CLASSROOM CURRICULUM AND FIELD VISITS. MYRWA SECURED 6M IN PUBLIC FUNDING FOR COLLABORATIVE GREENWAYS AND CLIMATE PROJECTS FOR THE WATERSHED. THIS INCLUDES GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE IMPROVEMENTS LIKE INFILTRATION TRENCHES THAT FILTER STORMWATER, CONSTRUCTED WETLANDS THAT PROVIDE HABITAT, PARKS AND REDUCE STORMWATER POLLUTION AND CONNECTED PATHS AND DESIGNS FOR IMPROVED PARKS. MYRWA REACHED 1,000 STUDENTS IN CLASSROOMS ACROSS THE WATERSHED-SHARING THE IMPORTANCE OF KEEPING OUR LOCAL ENVIRONMENT HEALTHY. ADDITIONALLY, 1,600 VOLUNTEERS REMOVED INVASIVE SPECIES FROM THE WATER AND LAND, PICKED UP TRASH AND DOCUMENTED THE RIVER HERRING MIGRATION AND CONDUCTED BASELINE WATER QUALITY MONITORING. MYRWA LAUNCHED THE WICKED HOT MYSTIC PROJECT THAT RESULTED IN HEAT MAPS THAT OUTLINE WHERE IN THE WATERSHED RESIDENTS ARE FACING THE HIGHEST TEMPERATURES, AND WHERE COMMUNITY INFRASTRUCTURE NEEDS TO BE IMPROVED. MYRWA PUBLISHED THE ANNUAL WATER QUALITY REPORT CARD FOR THE WATERSHED AND A REPORT ON HOW TO PROTECT CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE AND RESIDENTS IN THE LOWER MYSTIC.
