ST. STEPHEN'S EPISCOPAL SCHOOL IS AN ECUMENICAL CHRISTIAN CENTER-CITY DAY SCHOOL WHICH WELCOMES STUDENTS OF ALL FAITHS AND ETHNIC HERITAGES. THE SCHOOL'S MISSION IS TO NURTURE THE STUDENT IN AN ATMOSPHERE OF RESPECT FOR THE INDIVIDUAL STUDENT, TO PROVIDE SUPERIOR ACADEMIC TRAINING WHICH IS AFFORDABLE AND AVAILABLE TO ALL AND AS A PART OF THE OUTREACH AND MISSION OF THE CATHEDRAL CHURCH OF ST. STEPHEN, TO OFFER THE TEACHINGS FOR THE CHRISTIAN FAITH IN AN EPISCOPAL SETTING FOR THE CONSIDERATION OF ALL.FOUNDED IN 1978, ST. STEPHEN'S SCHOOL IS THE ONLY PRESCHOOL THROUGH EIGHTH GRADE RELIGIOUS SCHOOL IN DOWNTOWN HARRISBURG. THE DIVERSITY OF THE STUDENT POPULATION HAS ALWAYS BEEN A STRONG CHARACTERISTIC OF ST. STEPHEN'S SCHOOL. IT IS RELIGOUSLY DIVERSE; ONLY ELEVEN PERCENT OF THE STUDENT POPULATION IS EPISCOPALIAN; MANY OTHER RELIGIOUS GROUPS ARE REPRESENTED IN THE REMAINING 89%. IT IS GEOGRAPHICALLY DIVERSE; THE SCHOOL IS LOCATED IN DOWNTOWN HARRISBURG, BUT STUDENTS ARE DRAWN FROM DAUPHIN, CUMBERLAND, PERRY AND YORK COUNTIES. IT IS SOCIO-ECONOMICALLY DIVERSE; OVER TWENTY PERCENT OF THE STUDENTS QUALIFY FOR THE FEDERAL FREE LUNCH PROGRAM AND NEARLY FORTY PERCENT OF THE STUDENTS RECEIVE FINANCIAL AID TO ASSIST WITH TUITION COSTS.ST. STEPHEN'S SCHOOL ENCOURAGES STUDENTS TO ACHIEVE THEIR FULL POTENTIAL IN THEIR ACADEMIC, CREATIVE, PERSONAL, PHYSICAL, MORAL, AND SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT. SERVING A POPULATION OF 145 STUDENTS, CLASSES ARE KEPT SMALL SO THAT EACH STUDENT RECEIVES PERSONAL ATTENTION FROM TEACHERS AND STAFF.
STUDENT SERVICES INCLUDE LOCAL AND HANDS-ON FIELD TRIP EXPERIENCES THAT PROVIDE AN AUTHENTIC BRIDGE BETWEEN CLASSROOM LESSONS AND THE GREATER COMMUNITY AS STUDENTS CREATE CONNECTIONS. STUDENTS CAN BE SEEN ALONG RIVERFRONT PARK TAPPING INTO THEIR CREATIVE MINDS, AS THE PARK SERVES AS THEIR EQUIPMENTLESS PLAYGROUND. THE FOOTPRINT OF STUDENT GIVING CAN BE SEEN THROUGHOUT THE HARRISBURG COMMUNITY. THE STUDENTS HAVE CLEANED UP DURING 2 MINUTE TUESDAY, VOLUNTEERED AT THE CENTRAL PENNSYLVANIA FOOD BANK, AND COLLECTED AND MADE ITEMS FOR DOWNTOWN DAILY BREAD AND RADIANT HOPE. FROM THE SCHOOL'S FREE PANTRY CONCEIVED AND CONSTRUCTED BY THE KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS TO THE FOURTH GRADE TABS FOR LAB PROGRAM WHICH BENEFITS THE SUSQUEHANNA SERVICE DOG PROGRAM, OUR STUDENTS LEARN THE GRACEFUL ART OF GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY IN WHICH THEY RESIDE.
