PATERSON EDUCATION FOUNDATION IS INVOLVED IN VARIOUS PROGRAMS TO IMPROVE EDUCATION IN THE PATERSON PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM

THE NITA M. LOWEY 21ST CENTURY COMMUNITY LEARNING CENTERS (21ST CCLC): PEF'S OPERATES 21ST CENTURY COMMUNITY LEARNING CENTERS IN TWO SCHOOLS, PROVIDING AFTERSCHOOL AND SUMMER TUTORING, ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT, CULTURAL, ARTISTIC, AND SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL WELLBEING OPPORTUNITIES. THE PROGRAMS ARE STEAM BASED AND USE INQUIRY-BASED LEARNING TO FULLY ENGAGE STUDENTS IN THEIR OWN GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT. THE PROGRAM BEGAN IN OCTOBER 2020 AND SERVES 151 STUDENTS IN GRADES 3 THROUGH 8. PROGRAMS SUPPORT: ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES THAT CAN HELP STUDENTS MEET STATE AND LOCAL ACHIEVEMENT STANDARDS. A BROAD ARRAY OF ADDITIONAL ENRICHMENT SERVICES DESIGNED TO REINFORCE AND COMPLEMENT THE REGULAR ACADEMIC PROGRAM, SUCH AS: DRUG AND VIOLENCE PREVENTION PROGRAMS, CAREER AND TECHNICAL PROGRAMS, COUNSELING PROGRAMS, ART, MUSIC PROGRAMS, STEM PROGRAMS, AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND NUTRITION EDUCATION PROGRAMS. LITERACY AND RELATED EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT SERVICES TO THE FAMILIES OF CHILDREN WHO ARE SERVED IN THE PROGRAM.


GRADUATING EVERY PATERSON CHILD-THE VISION OF THIS PROGRAM IS THAT PATERSON SCHOOLS WILL GRADUATE 90% OF PATERSON STUDENTS ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN POST SECONDARY EDUCATION WITHOUT REMEDIATION. THIS INITIATIVE INCLUDES STRATEGIES FOR IMPROVING STUDENT OUTCOMES FROM BIRTH THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION.


THE RIVER STORY PROJECT BROUGHT TOGETHER PATERSON PUBLIC SCHOOL TEACHERS IN GRADES ONE THROUGH THREE TO DEVELOP INTER-DISCIPLINARY, PLACE-BASED LESSONS ALIGNED TO THE PPS CURRICULUN AND NJSLS STANDARDS. GUIDED BY THE GFTC LEADERSHIP TEAM, TEACHERS GATHERED ON SATURDAY MORNINGS WITH MEMBERS OF THEIR SCHOOL'S INTERDISCIPLINARY TEAMS TO LEARN MORE ABOUT PATERSON'S RICH HISTORY, UNIQUE ENVIRONMENT, AND SPECIAL PLACES. TEACHERS TOOK THEIR LEARNING BACK TO THEIR CLASSROOMS AND TOOK THEIR STUDENTS ON FIELD LEARNING EXPEDITIONS WITH THE SUPPORT OF GRTC TEAM AND NEW JERSEY AUDOBON. THIS PROGRAM WAS GENEROUSLY SUPPORTED BY THE MARILYN AND HENRY TAUB FOUNDATION. PEF HAS REPLICATED THE PROGRAM THROUGH A PILOT IN NEW BRUNSWICK PUBLIC SCHOOLS. THE NEW BRUNSWICK PILOT IS FUNDED BY JOHNSON AND JOHNSON FOUNDATION.
