ADDRESSING THE PLIGHT OF THE DISPLACED: IRRI RESPONDS TO THE NEEDS OF THE DISPLACED IN AFRICA BY, MONITORING PARTICULAR PROTECTION PROBLEMS IN THE AREAS WHERE WE OPERATE, PROMOTING POLICIES AT THE INTERNATIONAL, REGIONAL AND NATIONAL LEVELS WHICH BETTER PROTECT THE RIGHTS OF THE DISPLACED AND RESPONDING TO THE NEEDS OF REFUGEES FOR LEGAL REPRESENTATION. WE RESPOND TO THE NEED FOR LEGAL PROTECTION BOTH BY PROVIDING DIRECT ACCOMPANIMENT, FACILITATING REFERRALS AND PROVIDING SUPPORT TO LEGAL AID PROVIDERS THROUGH INFORMATION RESOURCES AND EXPERT ADVICE TO ALLOW THEM TO PROVIDE MORE EFFECTIVE ASSISTANCE.
USE INTERNATIONAL JUSTICE TO FIND SOLUTIONS TO CONFLICT AND DISPLACEMENT IN AFRICA.
UNDERSTANDING AND RESPONDING TO MASS VIOLENCE: IRRI PROMOTES APPROPRIATE RESPONSES TO MASS VIOLENCE THROUGH SUPPORT TO LOCAL HUMAN RIGHTS AND COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS, DIRECT ADVOCACY, AND COORDINATION OF CIVIL SOCIETY RESPONSE WITH A PARTICULAR FOCUS ON SUDAN. THE PROGRAM ALSO STUDIES INTERNATIONAL MECHANISMS FOR RESPONDING TO MASS VIOLENCE AND SUGGEST HOW THESE CAN BE ALTERED TO RESPOND MORE EFFECTIVELY TO THE NEEDS OF THOSE AFFECTED BY VIOLENCE.
