THE MUSEUM EXPLORES THE UNFOLDING HISTORY OF AMERICA BY COLLECTING AND EXHIBITING OUTSTANDING WORKS OF ART THAT ILLUMINATE AMERICA'S ARTISTIC HERITAGE.

IN 2021, CBMAA ACQUIRED 68 WORKS OF ART. BY CLASSIFICATION 25 SCULPTURES, 14 PAINTINGS, 4 CERAMICS, 4 MIXED MEDIA, 4 PRINTS, 4 TEXTILES, 3 DRAWINGS, 3 PHOTOGRAPHS, 3 TIME-BASED MEDIA, 2 INSTALLATIONS, 1 DECORATIVE ART, AND 1 WATERCOLOR WERE ACQUIRED. IN 2021, CBMAA BORROWED 639 OBJECTS FROM 133 SEPARATE LENDERS. CBMAA LOANED 72 OBJECTS TO 25 SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS APPEARING AT 25 INSTITUTIONS DURING 2021. EXHIBITION VENUES INCLUDED THE UNITED STATES, FRANCE, SINGAPORE, SPAIN, SWITZERLAND, AND AUSTRALIA. CONSERVATION CONTINUED DURING 2021 THROUGH THE FOLLOWING EFFORTS: PAINTING CONSERVATORS CONDUCTED TREATMENTS AND EXAMINATIONS OF 77 PAINTINGS OVER 3 VISITS TO CBMAA. OBJECTS CONSERVATOR CONDUCTED TREATMENTS AND EXAMINATIONS OF 69 SCULPTURES OVER 4 VISITS TO CBMAA. WORKS ON PAPER CONSERVATOR EXAMINED 93 WORKS ON PAPER ON SITE AT CBMAA. TEXTILE CONSERVATOR EXAMINED 18 OBJECTS ON SITE AT CBMAA. THE MOST SIGNIFICANT CONSERVATION TREATMENTS WERE PERFORMED ON-SITE BY CONTRACT CONSERVATORS: WAYNE THIEBAUD, SUPINE WOMAN (2009.17), DONALD JUDD, UNTITLED, 1989 (BERNSTEIN 89-24) (2012.499), MANIERRE DAWSON, CONFIGURATION (2019.18), AND CLAUDE LAWRENCE, INTERSECTION (2020.9). STAFF CONDUCTED REGULAR CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE OF 35 ARTWORKS INSTALLED OUTDOORS. AT YEAR'S END, CBMAA'S ONLINE COLLECTION PROVIDED ACCESS TO 80% OF THE COLLECTION (3,155 ARTWORKS) TO THE PUBLIC THROUGH CBMAA'S WEBSITE.
IN 2021, CBMAA WELCOMED 463,127 GUESTS AND PRESENTED SEVERAL COLLECTION FOCUS SHOWS, AND FOUR MAJOR EXHIBITIONS INCLUDING: CRAFTING AMERICA, CRYSTAL BRIDGES AT 10, NORTH FOREST LIGHTS, AND IN AMERICAN WATERS: THE SEA IN AMERICAN PAINTING. CRAFTING AMERICA WAS ORGANIZED BY CBMAA. THIS EXHIBITION EXPLORES THE PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE OF HOW CRAFT HAS SHAPED-AND CONTINUES TO SHAPE-AMERICAN IDENTITY, FEATURING OVER 100 OBJECTS FROM THE 1940S TO TODAY. THE MEDIUM OF CRAFT CREATES A MORE INCLUSIVE SPACE THAT EMBRACES INDIVIDUALS FROM DIVERSE BACKGROUNDS TO PARTICIPATE IN THE NATION'S FOUNDING IDEALS OF LIFE, LIBERTY, AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS THROUGH THE CREATION OF BEAUTIFUL WORKS OF AMERICAN ART. THE EXHIBITION TRAVELLED TO ONE ADDITIONAL MUSEUM. CRYSTAL BRIDGES AT 10 WAS CURATED AND ORGANIZED BY CBMAA TO CELEBRATE ITS 10TH ANNIVERSARY. IT FEATURED 130+ ARTWORKS, MAINLY FROM CBMAA'S COLLECTIONS, PRESENTED THROUGH 10 DISTINCT AND IMMERSIVE ART EXPERIENCES, INCLUDING SECTIONS DESIGNED TO FEATURE MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY AND SPACES CURATED OR CRAFTED BY GUEST ARTISTS, AS WELL AS SECTIONS EXPLORING CONNECTIONS BETWEEN ART AND NATURE. NORTH FOREST LIGHTS, LOCATED IN CBMAA'S NORTH FOREST, WAS THE FIRST OUTDOOR LIGHT EXPERIENCE COMMISSIONED BY CBMAA. THESE FIVE NIGHTTIME LIGHT AND SOUND EXPERIENCES EXPLORED THE POWER OF NATURE AS A CONNECTING AND COMMUNICATING FORCE THAT CAN BRING JOY. IT PROVIDED SPACES FOR PEOPLE TO GATHER AND ENJOY THE OUTDOORS, WHILE BEING TRANSPORTED BY MULTI-MEDIA ART AND ORIGINAL MUSIC COMPOSITIONS. IN AMERICAN WATERS: THE SEA IN AMERICAN PAINTING WAS ORGANIZED BY THE PEABODY ESSEX MUSEUM AND CBMAA. THIS EXHIBITION FOCUSES ON OVER 100 ARTWORKS THAT EXPLORE HOW THE SEA ACTS AS A SUBJECT, SYMBOL, AND EMOTIONAL CATALYST THAT SHAPES AND TRANSFORMS AMERICAN OPPORTUNITIES, ATTITUDES, AND CULTURAL VALUES. THE EXHIBITION FIRST OPENED AT THE PEABODY ESSEX MUSEUM AND THEN TRAVELLED TO CBMAA.
DESPITE THE CONTINUED DIFFICULTIES PRESENTED BY COVID IN 2021, CBMAA WAS ABLE TO FULFILL ITS MISSION OF PROVIDING ACCESS TO THE ARTS THROUGH A VARIETY OF EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS TO THE PUBLIC, WHICH REACHED 128,995 PARTICIPANTS. CLASSES AND WORKSHOPS ARE OFFERED FOR ALL AGES AND VARYING SKILL LEVELS, AND INCLUDE A VARIETY OF WORKSHOPS IN MEDIA SUCH AS PAINTING, SCULPTURE, PRINTMAKING, AND MULTIMEDIA, IN ADDITION TO NATURE TOPICS. ATTENDANCE = 3,401 DROP-IN PROGRAMS ARE NON-TICKETED AND PLANNED PRIMARILY FOR MULTIGENERATIONAL AUDIENCES. THESE INCLUDE LARGE-SCALE EVENTS TRICK ART TREAT AS WELL AS DROP-IN ARTMAKING ON THE WEEKENDS AND SCHOOL BREAK PROGRAMMING. ATTENDANCE = 21,467 FILM, PERFORMANCE & EVENING EVENTS ARE PRIMARILY TARGETED TOWARD COLLEGE AND ADULT AUDIENCES, AND INCLUDE MULTIDISCIPLINARY ARTS SUCH AS MUSIC, THEATRE, DANCE, AND FILM. ATTENDANCE = 10,034 LECTURES AND TALKS INCLUDE GALLERY CONVERSATIONS, NATURE TALKS, PANEL DISCUSSIONS, AND EXHIBITION LECTURES. ATTENDANCE = 4,308 OUR SCHOOL VISIT PROGRAM SERVES K-12 AND COLLEGE STUDENTS, ONSITE AND ONLINE, AND ALIGNS WITH CURRICULUM. ATTENDANCE = 11,915 TEACHER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS OFFER CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS THROUGH A VARIETY OF OFFERINGS, INCLUDING SATURDAY SESSIONS, SUMMER INSTITUTES AND EVENING FOR EDUCATORS. ATTENDANCE = 1,346 ACCESS AND INCLUSIVE PROGRAMS PRIMARILY SERVE INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES AS WELL AS SENIORS. EXAMPLES INCLUDE FAMILY ACCESS NIGHT AND PROGRAMMING FOR OLDER ADULTS. ATTENDANCE = 2,334 TOURS INCLUDE DAILY OFFERINGS OF GUIDED TOURS FEATURING CBMAA'S COLLECTION AND ARCHITECTURE, AS WELL AS TOURS PROVIDED FOR YOUTH ORGANIZATIONS. GUIDE TRAINING IS PROVIDED FOR THESE OFFERINGS MONTHLY. ATTENDANCE = 14,522 COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT OFFERINGS IN 2021 INCLUDED COMMUNITY ART-MAKING ACTIVATIONS WITH THE MOBILE ART LAB AT FESTIVALS AND LIBRARIES AS WELL AS CO-HOSTING PROGRAMS AT CBMAA WITH COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS. ATTENDANCE = 32,998 A VARIETY OF KITS WERE DISTRIBUTED TO COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS. KITS INCLUDED COMMUNITY CREATIVE CARE PACKAGES, FAMILY ART KITS, FOOD KITS, AND MY MUSEUM CLASSROOM KITS. ATTENDANCE = 25,502 DIGITAL EVENTS INCLUDE TEACHER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, SCHOOL TOURS, LECTURES, AND A VARIETY OF ART CLASSES AND WORKSHOPS. ATTENDANCE = 12,778 THE WINDGATE PROGRAM ENTAILED VIRTUAL ARTS INTEGRATION LESSONS AND LEARNING EXPERIENCES CONDUCTED THROUGH RESIDENCIES, TOURS, CURRICULUM EVALUATION, AND ORIENTATION FOR THE PARTNERSHIP SCHOOLS.
