"LIFTOFF" BY ALICE AYCOCK THIS PUBLIC ART PROJECT LOCATED AT THE DES MOINES INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT HONORS THE LATE JOHNNY DANOS, A COMMUNITY LEADER IN GREATER DES MOINES. "LIFTOFF" SERVES AS A METAPHOR CAPTURING THE ENERGY OF THE CITY, IT SPEAKS TO THE EXCITEMENT THAT TRAVELERS MAY FEEL DURING TAKEOFF AND LANDING. PAINTED A DAZZLING WHITE, LIFTOFF CATCHES THE LIGHT THAT, LIKE AIR, IS CONSTANTLY MOVING AND CHANGING. EVERY VIEW OF THE SCULPTURE IS DIFFERENT AND DISTINCT, TRACING THE SUNS PROGRESS ACROSS THE SKY OR, AT TIMES, THE CLOUDS THAT DRIFT OVERHEAD. EVEN AT NIGHT, THE SCULPTURE IS DRAMATICALLY LIT SO THAT IT WILL GLOW AS TRAVELERS PASS IN AND OUT OF THE AIRPORT.
"THRESHOLD" BY JANJO NOVELLA LOCATED AT A NEW 7 ACRE GARDEN AT THE DES MOINES BOTANICAL GARDEN, THIS PUBLIC ARTWORK HONORS FORMER DES MOINES MAYOR, TOM URBAN. THIS PROJECT FEATURES A 16-FOOT TALL IRON SCULPTURE OF A COMBRETACAE LEAF. THE COMBRETACAE LEAF IS A TYPE OF LEAF THAT CAN BE FOUND ON MAPLE OR OAK TREES IN IOWA.
RIVER TO RIVER: THIS PUBLIC ARTWORK, RAGBRAI: RIVER TO RIVER (WORKING TITLE), HONORS TWO INDIVIDUALS, JOHN KARRAS AND DONALD KAUL, WHO FOUNDED RAGBRAI. RAGBRAI IS THE OLDEST, LARGEST AND LONGEST RECREATIONAL BICYCLE TOURING EVENT IN THE WORLD. THE PROJECT FEATURES TWO BRONZE FIGURES (JOHN KARRAS) AND (DONALD KAUL). IT HAS 24 STEEL WHEELS AND IS APPROXIMATELY 29 INCHES IN DIAMETER. IT IS PLACED ALONG A WAVE OF ALUMINUM TO SUGGEST THE ROLLING HILLS ALONG THE ANNUAL ROUTES ACROSS THE STATE OF IOWA BETWEEN THE MISSOURI AND MISSISSIPPI RIVERS.
