THE KIRBY SCIENCE DISCOVERY CENTER (KSDC) AND THE VISUAL ARTS CENTER (VAC) CONTINUED TO DELIVER MEANINGFUL EXPERIENCES THAT INSPIRE AND ENTERTAIN THE COMMUNITY WHILE FOCUSING ON SAFETY AND PROMOTING INCLUSION. DESPITE THE CHALLENGES PRESENTED BY COVID-19 AND THE INHERENTLY HANDS-ON AND INTERACTIVE NATURE OF THE MUSEUMS, ATTENDANCE TOTALED 70,285 GUESTS. MUSEUMS STAFF FOUND NEW WAYS TO CONNECT WITH MEMBERS, BROUGHT IN EXCITING TOURING EXHIBITS, AND SPENT TIME IMPROVING THE TEAM AND THE CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE.HIGHLIGHTS OF THE 2020-2021 FISCAL YEAR FOR THE KSDC INCLUDED HOSTING TRAVELING EXHIBITS AND INSTALLING A NEW PERMANENT EXHIBIT CALLED GROW IT!, WHICH FEATURES MORE THAN 3,000 SQUARE FEET OF AGRICULTURE-THEMED EXHIBITS. HOSTED TRAVELING EXHIBITS WERE FOREVER FOREST, WHICH EXPLORES THE CONSERVATION OF FOREST RESOURCES, AND STORYLAND, WHICH TRANSFORMS THREE BELOVED AND AWARD-WINNING PICTURE BOOKS--"THE TALE OF PETER RABBIT" BY BEATRIX POTTER, "THE SNOWY DAY" BY EZRA JACK KEATS AND "WHERE'S SPOT?" THE VAC INAUGURATED THE YOUNG ARTISTS GALLERY IN THE LAST YEAR AS A MISSION-CENTRIC INITIATIVE, GIVING THE PAVILION THE OPPORTUNITY TO SEEK UP-AND-COMING TALENT WITHIN THE COMMUNITY AND GIVE THEM ACCESS TO A PROFESSIONAL GALLERY EXPERIENCE. IN THE LAST FISCAL YEAR, THE VAC FEATURED 35 STUDENTS FROM DAKOTA STATE UNIVERSITY AND THEIR WIRE-CONSTRUCTED WILDLIFE EXHIBITION ENTITLED "SHADOW CASTING." WITH THE HELP OF GUESTS' SMART PHONE FLASHLIGHTS, THIS EXHIBIT BROUGHT TO LIFE STATIC ANIMAL SCULPTURES IN A VIVID ANIMATION OF LIGHT AND SHADOW. THE BATES TRIMBLE GALLERY CAME ABOUT AS A COLLABORATION BETWEEN THE PAVILION AND GENEROUS SUPPORTERS IN AN EFFORT TO SEEK OUT THE BEST IN SOUTH DAKOTA, FEATURING ART OF ALL MEDIUMS. THE BATES TRIMBLE GALLERY FEATURED PROMINENT SOUTH DAKOTA ARTISTS INCLUDING JOE SCHAEFFER, CECA COOPER, NICK POPPENS, ANNA REICH AND JESSIE RASCHE.THE WASHINGTON PAVILION HAS INCREASED ITS FOCUS ON ITS VOLUNTEER TEAMS, THE GUEST EXPERIENCE, COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS AND OVERALL INVESTMENTS IN BOTH THE KSDC AND VAC. SPECIAL EVENTS, INCLUDING FAVORITES LIKE AG DAY, SPOOKY SCIENCE AND THE SIDEWALK ARTS FESTIVAL, CONTINUE TO BE A MAJOR PART OF WHAT THE PAVILION OFFERS ITS COMMUNITY. THE WASHINGTON PAVILION'S EDUCATION DEPARTMENT STRIVES TO PROVIDE OUTSTANDING EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR PEOPLE IN SIOUX FALLS AND THE SURROUNDING AREA THROUGH OUTREACH, CLASSES, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND SPECIAL EVENTS. EDUCATION PROGRAMMING REACHES A WIDE CROSS-SECTION OF THE REGION. THE PAVILION'S EDUCATION DEPARTMENT WORKED TO CONTINUE ITS MISSION OF PROVIDING ART AND SCIENCE EXPERIENCES TO THE COMMUNITY THROUGHOUT THE PANDEMIC. WHEN POSSIBLE, IT CONTINUED TO OFFER IN-PERSON PRESCHOOL AND CAMPS AND PROVIDED VIRTUAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR COMMUNITY GROUPS AND SCHOOLS WHO WERE UNABLE TO VISIT THE FACILITY.
