URBAN HABITAT BRINGS RACE AND CLASS TO THE FOREFRONT OF TRANSPORTATION, LAND USE, AND HOUSING POLICIES TO CREATE A BAY AREA WHERE LOW-INCOME PEOPLE OF COLOR CAN LIVE IN JUST AND CONNECTED NEIGHBORHOODS.

POLICY WORK: AFTER FIVE YEARS OF ADVOCACY, MTC HAS RESPONDED TO THE EFFORTS OF THE VOICES FOR PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION (VPT), WHICH URBAN HABITAT CO-FOUNDED, AND APPROVED A CLEAR PROCESS, TIMELINE, AND GOALS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF A REGIONAL TRANSPORTATION MEASURE. THE PLAN IS FOR A TRANSPORTATION MEASURE TO BE PLACED ON THE BALLOT IN 2026 OR 2028.WE PUBLISHED A PAPER, BUILDING A COMMUNITY-CENTER HOUSING PRESERVATION ECOSYSTEM, WHICH DESCRIBES THE ELEMENTS, NECESSARY TOOLS, AND KEY CONSIDERATIONS IN A STRONG PRESERVATION ECOSYSTEM TO STEM THE TIDE OF DISPLACEMENT. IT ALSO INCLUDES A WORKSHEET PRACTITIONERS CAN USE TO IDENTIFY STRENGTHS TO BUILD UPON AND GAPS TO FILL.TWELVE LEADERS GRADUATED FROM THE INAUGURAL VALLEJO LEADERSHIP COHORT WHERE THEY LEARNED ORGANIZING SKILLS SUCH AS DEVELOPING RELATIONSHIPS AND CANVASSING.


LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT: THE BOARDS AND COMMISSIONS LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE (BCLI) TRAINS AND SUPPORTS LOW-INCOME PEOPLE OF COLOR TO SERVE ON LOCAL AND REGIONAL BOARDS AND COMMISSIONS. IN 2023, WE CONVENED OUR 15TH BCLI COHORT WITH 10 FELLOWS REPRESENTING VARIOUS COUNTIES THROUGHOUT THE BAY AREA. 100% OF THE 2023 FELLOWS ARE SERVING ON A COMMISSION. WE CONTINUE TO SUPPORT ALUMNI WHILE THEY ARE SERVING ON COMMISSIONS. WE CONDUCTED INTERVIEWS WITH GOVERNMENT STAFF, MOST OF WHOM WERE BCLI ALUMNI, TO IDENTIFY BEST PRACTICES AND THE TRAINING AND SUPPORT NEEDS FOR EQUITY CHAMPIONS WORKING IN GOVERNMENT. THE LEARNINGS WERE PUBLISHED IN THE REPORT, BEST PRACTICES FOR EQUITY ADVOCACY WITHIN GOVERNMENT, TO HELP PRACTITIONERS USE THEIR POSITIONS TO CREATE TANGIBLE, POSITIVE CHANGE FOR HISTORICALLY DISENFRANCHISED COMMUNITIES.


RISING JUNTOS PARTNERED WITH LOW-INCOME PARENTS, YOUTH, AND SENIORS TOADVANCE RACIAL, ECONOMIC AND HEALTH JUSTICE IN CONTRA COSTA COUNTY.OUR LEADERSHIP TRAINING PROGRAM SUPPORTED HUNDREDS OF RESIDENTS TOINCREASE THEIR SELF-EFFICACY, SKILLS, AND UNDERSTANDING OF KEY SOCIAL SYSTEMS.OUR STRATEGIC ORGANIZING ENGAGED THOUSANDS OF FAMILIES TO BUILD SOLIDARITY AND TAKE COLLECTIVE ACTION TOWARDS COMMUNITY PRIORITIES. WE SUPPORTED RESIDENTS TO ENGAGE WITH LOCAL DECISION-MAKERS FOR EQUITABLE PUBLIC INVESTMENTS AND POLICIES RELATED TO HOUSING STABILITY, COMMUNITY SAFETY, RACIAL AND IMMIGRANT PROTECTIONS, AND ACCESS TO PUBLIC DECISIONS. OUR EFFORTS RESULTED IN THE PASSAGE OF RENT STABILIZATION AND EVICTION PROTECTIONS IN CONCORD AND INCREASED HOUSING STABILITY COUNTYWIDE.
